Hi,

I psoted last week on sleep thread. DD1 is 9mo. Ususallu good sleeper and eater. Last week and particularly last night getting worse and worse.

Off her food most of the time. Struggling to get usual amount of milk in(usually nearl 30oz;now managing 20 ish). Lots of drooling. Obvious upper incisor almost out. Rattling cough for nearly a month now with green runny nose. 2 nights ago fever of 38.5. Yesterday a rash on face and trunk.Very loose stools for days now.She also keeps tugging her right ear (??relevance)

GP yesterday pm: not concerned about her chest/ rash ('viral'). Relieved nothing serious.

Yesterday evening: went down as usual. From 21:30 screamed (not cried) for hours. Finally collapsed exhausted on DH 's shoulder. SLept for 1.5h repeated cycle every 1.5 hours overnight.

Difficult to get any painkiller into her/

Bottom line: could this all be down to teething??

Desperate for a reply.

Cheers.

Poor you and DD. Bet you are all exhausted. Assume GP checked her ears??? They usually do. I would be surprised if this is just teething but I am NOT a medical expert and only have 1 DD so am basing my response on limited experience! I would go back to GP (see a different one?) You spend much more time with her than anyone, I imagine, and you know your DD's normal behaviour. I went 3 times to GP in one week recently and only on third occasion did they diagnose tonsillitis and gave antibiotics. Hope you all get more sleep tonight.

They looked in her ears 3 weeks ago but not yesterday...complicated by the fact that I am working all blinking weekend...and DH is facing it solo. The prospect without sleep.

At the mo she is playing away on the carpet looking ok. But on the edge.

AAHH! Why don' t they come with a manual!

rash and chest does sound viral-sometimes children actually feel better when rash comes out but as in your DD not always the case. Pulling at ear can indicate ear infection and earache is excrutiating so I am really surprised they didnt look in her ears and if no better I wd suggest you go back. She may well be teething on top of all this of course-teething can cause refeered pain in ear and low grade temp (although most drs will argur taht teething doesnt make you febrile).
Regular calpol is your best bet all round tbh
but take her back for those ears if I were you.
HTH

thanks everyone.

Currently quite sporting getting painkillers in. Except if you believe she benefits from ASPIRATING it between fits of crying.

Part of the problem is that she always seems height of health at GP'S...typical.

The spectrum of fine to total distress is quite something.

Hope she is improving tonight. I meant to add earlier that my DD is at Olympic standard when it comes to refusing medication. It makes the whole illness thing even worse. Expect you have already tried lots of things but I found the most effective when she was a baby was to get a 1 ml syringe from the chemists and to do it a tiny bit at a time. Straight into the inside of her cheek so it doesn't go onto the tongue and can't taste it. Sounds horrible but you can get the syringe into their mouth without having to force it open. If she has a dummy try getting the syringe down the side of the dummy while it's in her mouth. Believe me I know how hard that is. Even medics in A and E could not get anything into my DD last time she had tonsillitis and they ended up giving us paracetamol suppositories. Your DD might be too young for these. Mine is 2 now. Might be worth trying to get a look at her throat cos my DD always pulls at ears with bad throat and totally off food. They quite often drool a lot if they are finding it hard to swallow.

neurofen.

It sounds like a cold + teething + possible ear infection. Get her to a GP tomorrow and ask them to check her ears. Usually if you can ease one of the causes the others will bother them less (IME)

DS was a big medicine refusnix - neurofen syringes helped a lot, as did pinning him down and ignoring the screams for 30 seconds
