Eczma remedies

Can anyone recommend treatments for Eczma - I'm a bit reluctant to use steroid cream as would ideally like to try some natural alternatives (homeopathy, organic...I'm open to ideas!)

Hot weather seems to aggravate and make it worse - behind the knees and on the stomach are the worst spots.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Be careful with homeopathic and organic treatments - just because they're natural, doesn't mean DC won't react and they can be quite harsh.

I would still recommend vaseline. No bubble bath/soap, other than a very mild all in one wash (my skin prefers tesco all in one baby body wash than johnson's. The tummy probably gets it due to a nappy (if your dc is in one- you don't say age of child).

Try to only put him in cotton and have cool layers at night so he doesn't get too hot.
Let Dc play semi naked when possible so that it doesn't get hot and damp and put on a smooth, thin layer of vaseline before dressing. My sister did this with her ds a few weeks ago as he had it all over his legs and arms and the next morning, he woke up and it had gone.
I had chronic eczema all my life and it's now gone. I have to keep it at bay though and for that I use vaseline.

skin salvation from purepotions.co.uk is very good. Of course I would test first but we have had a lot of success with this when ds was a baby but alas it has just reappeared 3 years later so we are now using it again.

Someone else on here is raving about something called "hope's relief cream". Haven't heared of it but worth researching.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Definitely avoiding the bubble bath and soap, although sometimes use an emolient in the bath water.
I have heard some people say their children with Eczma react badly to Johnsons too, interesting!
A friend of mine used an organic oil with lots of lavender in and apparently that made it flare up even more. I guess it's trial and error, different things work for different people.

Oatmeal in the bath is meant to be helpful, too...

But the main thing is to moisturise all the time.

Here is a previous thread with MN advice...

My son and I respond best to Lush's Dream Cream. Aveeno works well for us too. I agree it's a bit trial and error with eczema.

jasperc163 · 07/05/2010 20:23

As above - trial and error. We do well with Aveeno. I have tried a number of natural creams and many cause more irritation. Neals yard Calendula and Oat lotion also quite good, but would prob start with aveeno.

Another that worked very well for a while was SOS cream. But as someone says above, you often find that they get a reaction to something after a while and you have to chop and change.

I tried Hope's Relief cream a couple of years back and it made DD's skin go absolutely boiling and bright red within 5 mins.

fifitot · 07/05/2010 20:26

Aveeno bath additive and moisturiser worked for us. Anything else failed totally including loads of natural stuff.

You haven't said how old your child is but tbh I shyed away from steroid creams at first but found that it was good at quickly clearing an outbreak and then I used the Aveeno to keep the skin moist.

As long as you use very sparingly and follow instructions it does work well.

we got some oliatum type stuff from the gp, made and awful mess of the bath but worked really well.... DD now only gets dry legs and arms which we moisturise but have noticed it's getting worse with the weather change. have found aquius cream with calomine really good as it moisturises as well as soothes

Meandacat · 08/05/2010 06:46

I know a few people who swear by Lush products for eczema - not so much as a cure but as a toiletry range which provokes less of a reaction than others.

luciemule · 08/05/2010 10:18

careful with the oats on the bath thing - made my eczema much worse; all red and inflammed and sore.
