Tongue tie & what to do about it?

I have a 10 month old baby boy who has a tongue tie. The GP told me that in our area of Sheffield they do not routinely
cut the tongue tie unless it affects feeding which it does not. However we are now getting concerned that as he can't stick his tongue out. I am aware that this could affect his speech - in which we would be offered speech therapy - but we are also concerned that he won't be able to lick ice cream etc and may get teased at school. is this justification to go back to the GP and demand a referral?
I would love to know your experiences - thanks!

i have a tongue tie and have no problem eating ice cream/kissing etc etc! (or talking either)

i agree with the GP that there is no need to get it cut unless it is actually causing problems

at his age he would probably need a GA to do it, which seems a bit silly for something that may not affect him at all

I have 2 tongue tied children as well. one who hasn't had it snipped (5 yrs old, talks for england, amnd def eats ice cream!) and one who is 2.5 yrs and did have it cut but doesn't talk at all lol

a TT doesn't always cause speech problems so i would leave it be tbh

I would demand ask for a referal and let someone with more experience of TT make a decison than your GP.

DS was refered at 10mths and was seen by a surgeon but we were told (like you) that if it wasn't causing probs with feeding they wouldn't snip it.

He is now 3.2 and is seeing a speech therapist who is yet undecided as to whether his speech difficulties are related to his TT. (he has trouble making quite a few sounds). Personally I am kicking myself for not getting it done when he was a newborn.

Like thisisyesterday said, it may cause a prob with your DS or it might not. But I am glad we pushed and got our DS seen as they told us that if any problems did crop up when he was older they would see us straight away.

Oh and DS can stick his tongue out but can't lip his lips or try to touch his nose and that is why the SALT thinks it may be causing him speech difficulties.
