Reaction to MMR?

DD had her first mmr jab yesterday at 1pm. She seemed ok afterwards. At 4.30pm she fell asleep and woke at 6 absolutely hysterical. She was crying so hard she couldn't catch her breath.

She cried for 45 mins. We gave her some calpol and this seemed to help but at 12.30am we woke upset again. She wouldn't feed back to sleep and was really hot.

I striped her down to her nappy and the seemed calmer, falling asleep on my chest after some ibuprofen medicine (2.5ml).

She has now just vomited, although she didn't seem to notice and fell back to sleep.

Is this normal? They mentioned effects 7-10 days after the jab but not immediately.

NHS direct said she'd be fine after the calpol. I'm not sure what to do.

It may not be related. I know I was looking for signs of general unwellness / fever at 7-10 days.

I think there is a chance of an immediate reaction, though. She is around 13MO, yes?

Honestly (and this is simply my feeling) I would take her back to docs first thing if she is not feeling better when she wakes in the morning.

I worried endlessly about giving it to DS and he didn't have a single effect, but I know alot of friends whose kids have been a bit under the weather with it.

Hope she is feeling brighter sooner.

could be related, co-sleeping and lots of cuddles help. if it is not better soon, call the gp.

you can report side effects here

Thanks both. We're co-sleeping which is how I knew she'd vomited in my hair.

She's 15 months. Yes, at 7-10 days I'd have definately been looking for the signs but they just didn't mention she could be like this straight away.

She's still asleep which maybe just because she had an unsettled night but she's normally up at 6.30am.

I think I will call the gp and see what they say.

Thanks both of you.

How is she now, Hulla?

Hulla · 06/05/2010 14:32

She is fine today. The GP said it was to be expected. She was really sleepy yesterday - woke at 8.30am, bed at 7pm with a 1.5 hr and 2 hr nap in the middle of that.

I guess I worried for nothing but her other vaccinations haven't bothered her and I suppose I was a bit jumpy because it was MMR

Thanks for asking harimo!

Hulla- glad she's ok, my dd2 had a bad reaction to the MMR last year and we ended up in A&E, she had a temp of 41 and refused to eat or drink so became dehydrated, after a few hours on a ward she improved (started to eat and drink), her temp came down and we took her home.

I was a bit worried about her having the MMR as dd2 has Autism (i thought it could set her back a bit even though they say there is no link), i never expected her to react in this way and so quickly after having the jab (next day).

Just be prepared for a similar reaction when she has her booster (she may not react at all).
