so i was told calpol /ibuprofen and rest. more rest. but gave me a form to see an orhopedics specialist, but god knows when they will be.

i have googled but can';t find anything much.

ask your GP for a referral to a paediatric physiotherapist

has she had a hip Xray ?

piratecat · 04/05/2010 19:22

this is intetesting

synovitis due to viral infection

all i got AF was a bit of paper i handed in to the receptionist, who said i'd get a form sent out so i could ring up and get dd an appt.

piratecat, I can't comment about the clicky hip, although that should have been screened at birth? But DD1 is 4 and I have taken her to A&E 5 times with excruciating knee pain, where she (despite her SNs & speech delay) has said 'need to see doctor at hospital'.

Each time, the doctors have said that they believe that she has synovitis of the hip following viral infection (even a common cold can do it), and that in young children it can present as knee pain.

Calpol, ibuprofen, rest and rest, unfortunately. But if you were to go to A&E they would probably x-ray it, which would be no bad thing (they did for DD).

piratecat · 04/05/2010 19:50

lou thanks for that, your dd must have really been in agony to tell you to take her.

I wonder if it's related to this infection shehas had. gp put her strong penicillin friday, just in case the down below prb was bacterial. if it was viral (ie shingel related apparently) there would be no way the anibiotics would have helped. So apart form finding tou what's on the swab they did i am in the dark at the moment.

Could be coincidence of course andit's just this dodgy hip thing she sometimes gets, but it's never hurt like this before.

wel back to the gp we went again.

different one this time, my normal one, who explained that her clicky hip would have been cuased atbrith by problems with that socket. now the socket, for whatever reason is inflamed, and thats caused th ball to move too much iin worng places. it's not out of socket but obv not correct.

yesterday it went back in, dd told me as it's instant relife, but came out again.
dd resting now.

My DD had a clicky hip when born, and was scanned - got the all clear.

We noticed when she was about 18months that she had developed a funny gait, so we were referred to our childrens hospital where she had xrays, blood tests etc. They initially thought it was caused by a viral infecion, apparently they can "settle" in the hips of youngsters and cause inflammation and pain....perhaps thats the issue?

Fwiw, it wasn't an infection with DD, it was hypermobility and poor muscle tone. She's 2.8 and still can't walk too far without knee/hip pain, and when she was a cold or other viral infection its noticably worse.

Hope she gets better soon!

haggisaggis · 05/05/2010 15:02

My dd also had hip issues at birth which were picked up on a scan (it is hereditory so she was scanned automatically) but wasn't treated for anything as not too bad. She does though have very bad intoeing and flat feet and is hypermobile (but not so it causes pain). Due to teh intoeing she saw a paediatric orthopedic consultant who advsied she would probbaly grow out of it - but I managed to get her referred for physio anyway. She had about 3 blocks of physio - 6 weeks each time - and that was very good to build up her core body strength so thoroughly recommend. She also saw a podiatrist and had insoles for a bit but they made no difference.
She is 7 now and still badly intoes - I don't see her ever growing out of it - but teh physio cetainly helped to improved her balance so she falls less than she used to.

cory · 05/05/2010 15:47

Both my dcs have flat feet and extremely clicky joints and pain due to hypermobility.

piratecat · 06/05/2010 12:37

wow this is interesting reading thankyou.

dd's insoles didn't help either, tho her intoeing at 8 is marginally better then say at 5.

I ended up taking her to a+e last night as she was in so much pain, not an easy decision given it's 40 mins away, but doctors on call were concered it was infected joint.
3 hrs of waitng, and we are shattered today.

Pain still there, they ruled out infected, and just say it's inflamed. Go to have xray next week.

do any of your ds's have to take time off school or miss PE. i hate this missing aschol thing.

Not sure I should be answering this, pirate. My dcs are at the severe end of the hypermobility spectrum and have had a lot of time off school, mainly due to hip and back ache- bad ankles and knees we can deal with (by letting them use a wheelchair) but if you can't sit upright school isn't really an option. Have had them both home today. Am thoroughly fed up.

piratecat · 06/05/2010 22:34

cory, answer away. I am sorry you are feeling the strain. it must be unimaginably hard to not be able to help your dc's.
Seeing them in pain is shit. my dd is in bed now going 'mummy, mummy'
I really don't feel as though i am doing anything to help.

cory · 06/05/2010 23:00

But you are doing something, pirate, just by being there and caring. It will make all the difference.

I sometimes feel very despondent, particularly about dd who has struggled with pain for the last 6 years. But then I tell myself that she is actually still reasonably together, she has not given up on life or the idea of ever having any fun again, she still has a sense of humour, and she does bounce back- and I expect I must count for something in that.

cory · 06/05/2010 23:03

It is hard though, your poor dd.

Ds (9) is apparently fast asleep now- in my bed! He seems to find that more reassuring when his hip hurts- and I suppose it probably does him less harm than the large quantities of co-codamol prescribed by the doctor. We are hoping that the latest round of physio will make a difference, but at the moment he is in too much pain to do the physio.

piratecat · 07/05/2010 00:58

cory, bloody hell, I am sorry that your ds is in that much pain. They do love to get into our beds don't they, cos we are lovely mums. I hate it when i get ratty at her for saying she's hurting, i feel awful, and it's only been 10 days or so (she was ill last wek with something else).
