DD2 is 17 months old. She came down with a vomiting bug on Sunday night and vomited on and off all night until yesterday lunchtime.

She is keeping fluids down but was very upset and irratible and clingy to me all morning. She wants to breastfeed non-stop and keeps falling asleep.

Earlier she her temp went up and she really seemed unwell so I took her to the GP.

He said she has a throat infection and gave her an anti biotic to take.

She is unbelievably quiet - nothing like herself. She isn't talking at all. She is very sleepy.

Is this all normal for her age and illness? She hasn't eaten since sunday afternoon so I know she must be feeling tired and miserable.

I am freaking out a bit. DD1 has asthma and has been ill quite a bit but was never like this.

If her temp is high (or variable) then she will probably feel awful, perhaps a bit like having flu?

Poor little thing. Is she on any calpol or similar for the temp? If it is a throat infection, then the abs may well start to work very quickly.

If you continue to be worried, or symptoms change/get worse, then take her back to GP. It is worrying when they are ill. I remember my dd1 being off her food (first time ever) and it was so out of character it really worried.

my dc3 had tonsilitus a few months ago...i have never been so worried about any of my kids...he was really unwell. he was about 3ish.

he had antibiotics and was on the mend the next day. it seems quite normal to me, but you know your child best...don't be afraid of "making a fuss" if you think she is going downhill.

my mum used to work in a surgery, and doctors NEVER minded seeing poorly babies and young children, even in the middle of the night...they felt is was much better safe than sorry.

calpol is like magic if your dd will take it...

PrettyCandles · 04/05/2010 19:23

This does seem normal to me. For a very poorly toddler, of course. When my dc have been poorly, especially while still breastfeeding, they have sometimes been glued to my lap for a day or more.

Keep breaastfeeding, no matter how often she vomits, and don't worry for the time being about other foods. If her temp doesn't come down with only Calpol, I would go back to the GP. Normally you can double up Calpol and Ibuprofen, but I don't think ibuprofen is a a good idea on an upset stomach. If she's not started to perk up in 24h, or she appears dehyrated at any time, then go back to GP or call NHSDirect.

Hope she's on the up soon.

Thanks for the replies.

She is asleep in DH's arms now.

She has hardly been awake all day.

I just don't know what to think.

She was awake at the GPs because it was windy when I took her out of the car and it woke her and then she was very upset being examined so he didn't see her like this.

Meant to say I am giving her Paralink suppositories because it is very difficult to get medicine into her.

They are to be taken every six hours but the effects seem to wear off sooner.

I think I will give her an hour and then ring the OOH's service and speak to a nurse.

Even severe asthma attacks, ambulance, oxygen, hospital etc etc never made dd1 go this way.

I would find her being so drowsy worrying too. Is she difficult to wake up?
Follow your instincts. Call NHSDirect and see what they say

suiledonne · 04/05/2010 19:31

DH has her up now and feeding her water from her sippy cup.

I'm probably just overtired (haven't slept much for the last two nights and have been breastfeeding her almost non-stop for two days)

It's a good sign if she is having some water. Could her appetite be tempted even with something usually not allowed (chocolate buttons or similar?)

Is she with you in your bed at night? We kind of co-slept with our dd2 (officially she had her own room/bed) but if she was ill for my own peace of mind I brought her in with us, either directly in our bed or in a travel cot so she was close by.

You must be exhausted. If she is settled with her daddy for now could you try and grab an hour or two's sleep until she needs breast milk again?

winnybella · 04/05/2010 19:35

Hmmm...if it was me and I would feel something was amiss, I would probably go to A&E. I don't have that much experience as ds only had few ear infections when he was little, but except the few hours/day before he saw a doctor and was put on ABs he seemed ok- I mean tired, sleeoing more etc, but not whole day.

Is she responsive when awake? Are her hands and feet the same temperature as the rest of her body or cold?

Sazisi · 04/05/2010 19:36

It could be (and hopefully is) that she's just one of those kids who gets really dozy when ill.

Is she focusing and eveything when she is awake?
Make the call now, just to set your mind at ease

winnybella · 04/05/2010 19:37

Neck stiffness? Light aversion?

She probably has just an infection and will perk up soon, but if you're worried, call a doctor.

How is she, suiledonne?

girlsyearapart · 04/05/2010 20:17

Her symptoms sound really similar to 18m old dd2's.

Yesterday she had a runny nose and cough but was carrying on as normal then at a friends house her legs buckled, she fell. went floppy, vomited then went floppy again.

So so scary took her straight to a and e she was trying to fall asleep despite having just had a good nap, turning her head away from the light into my arm and had a rash on her chest.

Anyway they said it wasn't menningitis and was a viral respiratory tract to keep up fluids and let her rest.

Today she isn't her usual self but miles better so hopefully same goes for your dd.

suiledonne · 05/05/2010 08:40

Thanks everyone.

Sorry to disappear last night.

Rang OOH and they said bring her in.

Doctor said definitely viral and to stop anti biotic as she doesn't need it and too hard on her stomach.

She had terrible diahorrea in the night but temp has come down and she is a little better.

glad she's on the mend...hope she perks up today too. x

winnybella · 05/05/2010 12:45

Oh, good. Hopefully she'll get better soon.

Ffrecklefface · 05/05/2010 12:54

Glad she's feeling a bit better.

My DD is 2.2 and she is a sleeper when she's not well. Goes off her food entirely and just wants to cuddle and sleep all the time. So don't be too worried about it - there are worse ways to spend a day than on the sofa with a cuddly toddler.

suiledonne · 05/05/2010 13:29

Thanks for thinking of us

She is sleeping again but at least when she is awake she is a little more alert so I am not as worried about her.

It is dd1's 4th birthday tomorrow and she is feeling a bit neglected.
I have arranged for her favourite aunt to come up this evening for a visit so at least that might give me a little break.
