No other symptoms as far as I can tell.

It seems to be random as to when he gets it.

Is there something that might cause this other than DontWantToGoToSchool-itis? Growth spurts, puberty, dehydration? Otherwise I am going to keep forcing him out of bed and to school every day and feeling like Mrs Herod

Giddy as in the world spins slightly and he feels off balance? If so, has he had a fall or a biff to the head recently? He could have a neck issue that would be affecting his balance.

I had this - a fall off my bike caused a shunt in my cervical vertebrae (and a fractured collarbone) which gave me transient vertigo. Had my ears all checked by ENT specialists who told me my inner ear was damaged - nothing I could do, just do silly head-wobblng exercises so my brain got bored of being dizzy.

Then an osteopath fixed it for me.

Or he could have inner ear issues.

thumbwitch - he is always having falls - he spends half his life on a skateboard (and a good proportion of the other half falling of it ).

Oh. Perhaps I should get him checked out then.

My dd always feels giddy as well.

She has very low blood pressure and that was given as the main reason (but she had a load of ear infections a couple of years back, and think that the dizziness may be a part of that).

She also had heavy periods and was anaemic, she is on the pill now so the heavy periods have stopped, however she still gets giddy spells, especially when she starts moving about after a period of inactivity, or when she exercises.

Maybe get his blood pressure checked Orm, or a blood test to check iron levels at well?

I would - because if he has got transient vertigo it can strike at any time - the worst for me was halfway across the road with nothing to hold me up. Normally I just veered into walls and stuff, the stairs were scary though. If he is doing skateboarding, he needs to have good balance all the time or he'll fall of even more!
