how old is your child and where's the wart - if it's ok to ask?

anonandlikeit · 01/05/2010 22:43

He is 7 & it's on the palm of his hand... don't know where it came from??

ds1 is 9yo and has a load of them, and the trouble is that they are on his hands and knees and he's now regularly falling over and ripping bits off them (ewwwwwww)
we went (eventually) to the dr with them yesterday, who 'froze' them a bit and referred ds on to the dermatology specialist, who we'll hopefully be seeing in the next couple of weeks. All the wart treatments available OTC I've seen aren't recommended for children under 12 and as my ds1's an allergic kind of child I didn't dare push my luck with it.

my dd (aged 5) has a large wart on her finger and the practice nurse prescribed Duofilm.

It is suitable for children over 2 years and is colourless although not completely odourless.

anonandlikeit · 01/05/2010 23:03

Thanks for the info, so nothing available from the chemist then?

dd had one frozen/burnt, not sure, after having had it for 18 months.
brilliant result.

boogywoogy · 01/05/2010 23:04

I think the Duofilm I have may be available over the counter.

SlartyBartFast · 01/05/2010 23:05

by dermatologist btw

anonandlikeit · 01/05/2010 23:05

Thanks boogywoogy, if it smells he's either hate it & get upset or love it & try to eat it. He has asd & learning difficulties, so I need to put something on that he isn't going to notice IYKWIM.

The smell only lasts for a moment so hopefully he won't notice. It also dries quickly.

anonandlikeit · 01/05/2010 23:06

I can remember having a Varucca burnt off as a child, I just can't imagine him tolerating that very well.

Maybe that would work then Boogywoogy, i could put it on when he is asleep.

i spose my dd who was 9 at the time, is quite brave.

catinthehat2 · 01/05/2010 23:09

Boogywoogy -
is the Duofilm working do you think? (Wart treatments seem to do nothing very much IME)

anonandlikeit · 01/05/2010 23:09

Or I'm a big baby
Thanks for the info

Well we have only been using it since Monday. dd has had the wart for a while but it began to look a bit inflamed so I took her to the surgery.

It does seem to have calmed it down a bit and we have been using an emery board very softly to take off the layer of Duofilm and apply a fresh one each day.

boogywoogy · 01/05/2010 23:12

The nurse did say that they could freeze it off but it wouldn't be very pleasant and unless the virus was coming to an end, a wart may appear in a different place.

catinthehat2 · 01/05/2010 23:25

interesting, thanks BW

gigglewitch · 01/05/2010 23:33

now I see your isshhooo, anything he can see he'll want "off" cos it doesn't belong, right?

maybe worth asking for an appointment with gp and see if they can prescribe anything, even possibly without your ds being there?

gigglewitch · 01/05/2010 23:35

btw have you already tried emery boards and tea tree oil? It may be your best bet if he won't keep anything else on
And it works, ds got rid of verrucas this way, but took about 4 weeks.

anonandlikeit · 01/05/2010 23:47

He has severe sensory problems, he wouldn't even touch an emery board so I recon I would have to sit on him to get near the wart!
Thanks for the tip though.

Need to get rid of it as he is not using that hand & won't even look at it, he is walking around with his hand behind his back.

ohhh poor little guy (am an ASD specialist teacher ) Does his school or any of your healthcare contacts have any sensory therapists around? It might be worth looking into some kind of hand massage and desensitisation programme - well at least that's what I'd be tempted to look at. Will have to get that hat off before I start rabbiting on now hehe!

anonandlikeit · 02/05/2010 00:15

I'll give his OT a call (he is at MS with 1to1) she has been great with sensory stuff so far so she may ahve a few tricks up her sleeve.
I think whatever we decide it's going to be something to put on while he is asleep.
He did let me touch & have a look while he was in the bath tonight, but he had to go under the water first & just left his hand poking out for me to look at.

Just when he is nice & settled & doing well, these simple things throw a little spanner in the works - never mind there are worse things.

Thanks for the ideas, we need more ASD teachers in the world

what about the home freezing treatments you get e.g. wartner - they do a kids one suitable from the age of 4.
