if you can't use amtihistamine syrup? Was just reading the carton of our boots own version of piriton, and see it is only for over 1s. is there anything other than calamine you can use for an under one? do they just have to put up with the itching?

oats in their bath should help.

BertieBotts · 01/05/2010 19:22

Are you breastfeeding? Breastmilk on the spots should help a bit.

But yes oats in a pop sock in the bath are good.

To reduce the itching of chicken pox, soak a cloth in a mix of baking soda, lavender essential oil and cool water and apply to the affected area.

I pulled that off another site.

Calamine cream - stays on much better than the lotion. You should be able to get it at any chemist.

choufleur · 01/05/2010 19:29

Oats. bloody relevation when DS had chicken pox. Just wrap them in a muslin or similar and soak them in the bath.

Aquaeous cream with calamine in is better than just calamine as it doesn't dry out.

I thought you could use antihistamines from 6 months.

sorry, should have said, DD2 doesnt have it yet, but it is doing the rounds among DD1s friends so i am preparing just in case, for both of them. i am bf at night , that is really interesting, i could use bm on DD1 if she gets it too.
piriton might be different but the boots one says from 1 year up.
does anyone know if there is any evidence that bf might help against catching it? am mixed feeding now back at work but could probably up the bf if i have to, and have plenty of ebm in the freezer from previously.

loads of good ideas here, thanks. let's hope i dont actually need them just yet!

this is probably going to sound mad but...

sudocream

I reckoned if it took the sting out of nappy rash it would take the sting out of spots

seemed to do the trick and helped with healing towards the end

DS had it a couple of weeks ago and we used a fairly new product called Viralsoothe. It's a gel that cools and soothes without drying out. We also used, as others have said, oat based products (Aveeno) in the bath. Both quite expensive but worth it though!

olivo · 02/05/2010 20:03

thank you . i use aveeno on dd1's dry patches but will also look out for viral soothe. anything that makes life less itchy has got to be worth it!

bicarb of soda in a lukewarm/cool bath works wonders, went through tubs and tubs of it when ds had them and it was the only thing that really helped him. Even had baths at 4am!

LoveJules3 · 02/05/2010 21:29

If you talk to the doc they may recommend something, Piriton can be used on under 1's but only on prescription.
I'll second the Bicarb baths and calamine aqueous cream though, worked wonders with my girls!

Wags · 02/05/2010 21:36

DS had chicken pox at 14 weeks. He was prescribed Piriton from the Dr. It was the same as the one that you have from the sounds of it. Best to pop to Dr's tomorrow and get him to give you a presctiption for it. DS was exclusively BF and still caught it. Think its pot luck unfortunately.

Wags · 02/05/2010 21:40

Ah,just read that DD doesn't have it yet. In that case keep everything crossed and visit Dr as soon as she gets it so you can give Piriton if you want to.

olivo · 04/05/2010 20:29

Thanks. DD1's other best friend (close knit threesome!) now has it so it looks like it's only a matter of time.

I'll be passing on your tips!
