6 year old ds weeing frequently

My ds needs the toilet very frequently. I hadn't thought too much about it but his teacher has mentioned it now. Yesterday he said he used the loo 6 times at school - although this is only works out as once per hour, sometimes he goes 3 times in the space of half an hour or so.
Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Is this a sudden issue or has he always done it? UTIs can cause urgency so might be worth getting his wee dipsticked at the drs and/or a specimen sent off for infection.
However some children do tend to wee frequently and its often when they are worried about wetting themselves. Although it may seem counterproductive upping fluids can really help so they learn to get the sensation of a full bladder-its a muscle and needs working out just like any other. Many children dont drink enough at school which exacerbates the problem.
Other thing to consider is is he constipated? Can cause frequency/urgency...

Thanks Oddgirl - sorry been having internet problems.
It is a fairly recent problem so will take your advice over the weekend and give him plenty to drink (plus plenty of fruit and veg in case he is constipated) and see what happens. If no change I will call the GP on Tues. Saddo mumy here has counted - he went to the loo 16 (!!!) times in total today. Admittedly 3 of them were in the 20mins before bedtime so may have just been delaying tactics!
He is dry at night though and only really goes to the toilet at about 5.30-6am so he can go for longer periods
