should I really not give DS anything to eat?

He's had green diarrhoea for about 5 days and an obviously uncomfortable stomach. I took him to the docs day before yesterday and she said to give him only clear fluids and a bit of milk if he really seemed to want it. He's 7 months and breast fed with the odd bottle plus his solids.

He's starving though, so I've had to give him quite a lot of milk and the green runs are ongoing. I feel it isn't going to get better if I keep giving him so much milk but really can't hear him cry with hunger. No vomiting.

Don't know what to do for the best and he's very out of sorts

Does anyone have any advice?

Have you thought about getting him looked at in A&E?

Seona thanks heaps for that - I was still doing milk feeds but the pharmacist yesterday said to just give the dioralyte for the day to settle her stomach and slow down the diahorrea. I did it during the night as I thought if she missed night milk it wouldn't be too bad. We had clear nappies, no diahorrea so I think it has helped. I'm going to try a bottle in an hour or two.

Vigour you poor thing and your poor little boy. My DD isn't vomiting so I think you have it a lot tougher. Maybe A&E as some others suggested? A friend's baby (who I am sure we got this bug from) was vomiting and had diahorea and got dehydrated so they took her to A&E for fluids. She was a little younger than our ones though. I am sure you have tried it but maybe also the dioralyte? DD looked at me like when I gave it to her the first time but then last night sucked it back and it's seemed to help a lot. I got rasberry flavour, the NHS direct said that was the nicest apparently!
Really hope your DS is doing better this morning and that you managed to get some rest. It's so horrible when they are ill, you wish it could be you instead.

hello, well DS is still miserable this morning. He can just about play and offers the odd smile but you can tell he feels rubbish. Our problem is that he has a stinking cold with the diahorrea. His nose is streaming with thick green mucus.

No more vomiting but then he hasn't had any solids.

I would definitely take him to A&E if I thought he was dehydrated but as he's breastfeeding quite a lot and drinking a little water I don't think I would put him through a day of hanging around. I'll get some diarolyte because if he likes it it'll be more fluids which is a good thing. Thanks for the tip!

He's still weeing but not nearly as much as usual - his morning nappy is wet but light.

The sounds of his constant thin wail is making me so .

That's good he's not dehydrated but crappy he's still not feeling better. My DD also has the streaming nose, which she is treating as some kind of wonderous snack dispenser, sigh. Each time I try to wipe it, she screams the house down. And there I was thinking I would never be the mother who had a snotty nosed child.

I also gave her a little baby rice this morning and so far, so good.

Your poor little guy.

ditto here on the nose wiping. We've stopped bothering in the face of deafening noise.

We put The Smiths on this morning to cheer our little sunbeam up...

I'm letting him watch tv now, he's pretty happy about that!

Ha ha, that's exactly what we do when she's really really upset. She thinks its an amazing treat!

VigourMortis · 03/05/2010 19:23

well I think DS has turned the corner today. He still doesn't have much of an appetite but he's back to his usual jolly self and actually crawled for the first time.

Bizarrely even though I'm utterly exhausted and somewhat desiccated from all the breastfeeding, I kind of feel we have a different bond now that he knows I'll always see him through !
