Worms, Ovex medicine and runny bum

ES is 5 and had an itchy bum yesterday. Gave him some Ovex medicine last night.

Came home from school and went to the loo. Was a runny poo ( couldn't see too much as I'd bleached the loo this morning and it was murky from the bleach). And on his pants was a little threadworm.

Does worms or Ovex cause runny bums?

Asking cos' he's got a school trip tomorrow and dunno what to do really. Do I tell the teacher about it? Send spare clothes or keep him off?

Not in our experience no, but I believe that having threadworms can cause diarrhoea, Hopefully that is over now, and can go and enjoy his trip...

If it is anything more like a bug, you will soon know, but if not, maybe a note to his teacher about the threadworms and a spare change in his bag.

Having threadworms doesn't mean he is ill though.

Hope he has a great day!

the side effects for ovex include stomach pain and diarrhoea - is there not a leaflet that comes with it so you can check what it says? (I googled for info)

It does cause runny bottoms, as do worms, as they irritate the gut. Mention to teacher and def pack spare clothes just in case. He will most likely be fine though as medicine goes through system quite quickly and flushes the worms out.

Thank you girls.

And thanks for googling Seona! The youngest made off with the leaflet and I've not seen it since.

I am hoping it's the medicine. Gave him a 'gentle' evening meal. No tummy or bum problems since except for a really itchy bottom so put abit of savlon around his bum ( ah the joys of kids) which seems to have helped.

If he gets through the night ok he's off on the trip with spare clothesand a warning to the teacher.

Hope you are right and it was a vast amount of exiting worms causing the problem.

Right - bedding to wash, towels to boil etc.....
