migranes and palpatations

My ds is 12 years old and from the age of 3 he has suffered from frequent migranes at least 2 a month, they are generally worse in the summer. He suffers with the headache and sickness and needs to go to bed in a dark room and sleep for around 6-10 hours before they subside, calpol/paracetamol doesn't work. Last week he had 2 and was in bed the minute he got home from football. I've taken him to the gp a few times over the last few years ago who suggested getting his eyes tested and that he should grow out of them, eyes were fine when he went for an eye test at 7 years old and he hasn't grown out of them. He plays alot of football for 2 teams throughout the week and has also been complaining of his heart beating to fast and feels like its going to beat out of his chest.
I took him back to the gp last week as I don't feel its right as it is interfering with his every day life. We was 8 mins late due to being stuck in traffic so was left waiting for 50 mins and was then called in at which point the gp informed me that he only had 2 mins to spare as i was late and told me to get his eyes tested again as it is very rare for a child to be getting migranes and then prescribed an asthama pump for his palpatations without examining him??? I was disgusted because had I have been told by the receptionists that as i was late i would not get a proper consultation I would of then made another appointment also the fact he just prescribed an asthama pump without doing a peakflow or anything. He is having his eyes tested today and I am taking him back to the doctors on Thurs to see a different doctor to see if we can get any answers and because I feel its so unfair that he has to suffer so much with them. Just wanted to ask if anyone has had any similar experiences or know what might be causing them? Thanks

Has he had any blood tests? Iron levels linked to palpitations?

Push your GP for referral and proper evaluation. You're right to be concerned about knee jerk prescribing of asthma medication. Appalling. He needs a proper diagnosis. Push push push!!!!

(I am not a doctor and I have little knowledge but some experience of palpitations)

I have a form to get bloods done which I will organise today, he said the bloods were to rule out thyroid?
I was appalled too and made a complaint to the practice manager and told him that I do not want to be seen by that gp again! How you can assess a child in 2 mins is beyond me
Thanks for replying.

No problem - is becoming more frequent that I hear of GPs sending people away with medication rather than investigating route cause, and we all have to be ready to push back a bit!!

Don't know much about the thyroid but could be an issue - full blood analysis should be done, I think. You're going back to see another GP Thursday? Write down lots of info and questions to talk about.

Lots of luck for getting this sorted.

Hi titchy77 , My son 11yrs also suffers from migraine headaches , Like your ds these headaches can last up to 3 days & ds can be very sick with them . my ds usually gets 1-2 headaches a week now , i first took him to my GP when he was 8yrs old as he had just started to get them at that age , my GP was great & immediately made an appointment with the hospital for ds to have an MRI scan . Thankfully the results came back clear . Ds's gets bullied so headaches have been put down to the stress of that . I have found making sure ds drinks plenty of water has lessened the severity of the headaches , In our case the headaches run in DH's family . i hope you can take your ds to a different doctor & ask to be referred to a specialist , Good luck x
