Does anyone else have DC with a tendency to nosebleeds?

DS seems to have quite a few of these - he is 5. They are always short-lived and don't seem to bother him much, and he is otherwise a robustly healthy boy, but should I consider going to the GP about it or justremind him not to pick his nose too much.

I had them a lot as a child, everytime my mother talked to the GP about it they said that if it got worse they'd cauterise my nose. They never did. In my case I used to faint also, which was more of a concern tbh. It's worth explaining to your ds what he should do when he gets a nose bleed as you'd be surprised how many adults don't know or panic.

I was the same as HousewifeOfOrangeCounty. Never ended up getting my nose cauterised. The bleeds didn't last long enough for the Drs to be worried.

ds1 used to have several a week but seems to have grown out of it in the last few years
he used to get up in the mornings with blood literally gushing. i did take him to doc but he wasnt overly concerned as the blood flow was stopping itself within about half an hour

Miggsie · 27/04/2010 10:46

Yes DD is prone to them, I was the same as a child.

I grew out of it, so will DD.

Colds aggravate it and so do fizzy drinks. Neither DD or I ever drink fizzy drinks.

It's annoying but not much you can do.

Those nasal soak up strips that Boots sell are great.

Don't go for the cauterisation. A consultant advised my dad it could bring on migraine. I rarely get a nosebleed now, although I did when pregnant!!!!

The important thing is not to show panic and be just be matter of fact. I remember DD when she was about three wandering in saying "oh all that red stuff is coming out of my nose again!" and getting a tissue. My friend acted like DD had been in a car crash, but I just kept calm. Even now, DD is 6 and is annoyed by the nosebleeds but not stressed or anxious.

My ds is 5 and is also prone to them, mostly in the same nostril. Dp had them as a child too. There is never much blood and they stop quickly, I guess he will grow out of it but I have started noting the date on the calendar in my phone just to moniter how frequent they are. He is also a typical 5 year old boy and very very active!

I always had them as a kid, usually when I was stressed or hot and bothered from dashing around. It would bleed for ages, all that stuff about tipping my head forward never helped I had to let it stop in it's own time.

In the end I had my nose cauterised when I was 15. The pain was shocking, it felt like a red hot joss stick being stuck up there.

Stopped the nose bleeds though. But I don't think a young child could take that sort of pain .

My dd2 who is 5 gets nosebleeds, rarely in winter/when it is colder, but usually in warm weather. She has had 2 in the last week, when it has got warmer. She has them a lot during the night for some reason.

simpson · 27/04/2010 17:42

My DS (4.9) is prone to nose bleeds too.

TBH I never thought of a common denominator causing them before but thanks to who ever mentioned overheating as thinking about it, they always happen when he has got too hot ie jumping on trampoline (butnot bumped himself iyswim)

pleasantplucker - he has had a few in the night too (must have over heated, then too thinking about it)

southeastastra · 27/04/2010 17:43

yes ds(8) does too, always in hot or cold weather, something to do with the central heating in cold weather i remember reading. dp got one the other day too.

suitejudyblue · 27/04/2010 22:32

Two of my DCs had nosebleeds and agree that they were worse in hot conditions. They got less frequent with age for both of them, 11 year old rarely gets them and 7 year old only occasionally.
I never visited the gp about them.
