hi my ds1 (4 1/2) has been ill nearly every week since xmas. She had 3 weeks of separate ear infections. She's had temperatures, colds and the latest was a week of diarrhoea. The diarr ended on wed and back to school on thurs. ok thurs and fri and now has headache shivers, temp and has gone to bed. She is constantly saying her ear hurts but been to the docs (on mon) and he checked ears - a little pink but fine. i told him about her history and he thought it was down to starting reception and she should be bette by summer, when the viruse die down.

I am getting quite concerned now (and fed up of her being ill all the time). She's always been a well child (only 1 tummmy bug in her life) but has always picked up colds etc. Should I be worried - could this just be a bad run, or a sign of something more serious?

She's missed so much school, i'm ebarrassed to call the office now.

Please help!

Thanks. Dawn.

Bless her!!!!! It has been a tough winter and everyone I know says the worst for bugs they have known. My kids have been poorly a lot. I can see why you're worried but tbh I think it's normal. Some kids suffer more when starting school. My ds friend seems to pick up everything and has lots of time off. With regard to her ear, it could be same infec not clearing properly, this happened to ds and eventually we found an anti b that worked on his ears. (he allergic to penacillin). Although u had her ears checked on Monday, it could be an infec now if it was a little pink then. This happened to my dd, 4 days of going to drs as she had been sooo cranky but no temp then sudden temp, took her back and dr said infec was bad! Wierd!

Can u get her seen today?

Why don't u try some vitamin supps to help long term?

Hope it improves soon.

just wanted to offer my sympathy as have been in the same boat since last july with both my ds's. with ds2 i have always put it down to his prematurity and asthma and the fact that he is still very young so is building his immunity (although it has been hell in the meantime) also a little reassured by him having had loads of tests for underlying probs and thank goodness all clear.

however with my 4 year old ds1 (who i had always thought of as the 'strong' one due to not previously getting ill that much) i am in much the same boat as you. he has literally barely been well more than a few days all autumn and winter. umpteen colds which almost always turn into ear infections. also tonsillitis, upset tummies and the latest is he is on his second bout of appalling mouth ulcers

i agree with pp that the red ear could have turned into a full on ear infection by now. i once completely missed my ds's ear infection and only took him to the gp because he had a week of diarrhoea. it turned out to be the untreated ear infection just making him generally unwell.

is your dd in reception or pre-school? i have no idea how my poor exhausted little boy is going to cope with full days when he starts reception in september

good luck, i feel your pain.
