Ds1 is 6 and has burnt his finger on a car cigarette lighter. (Apparently trying to plug in mil sat nav)
The burn is small but has blistered and is brown.
He has his finger in cold water and I ahve given him calpol.
Is there anything else I can do (or need to do)?
He is ok in himself so don't think he is in shock

How big is the burn?

iMum · 23/04/2010 17:31

Clng film it, best treatment for burns.

jimblejambles · 23/04/2010 17:34

The burn is entire finger tip.

Smother it in honey and put cling film over the top.an ice pack over that will help take the sting out the pain. Don't put cling film directly onto a burn!

Pronoia · 23/04/2010 17:57

I'd take him to A and E, actually. Burns can be nasty and fingertips are VERY sensitive./

IMoveTheStars · 23/04/2010 18:07

DON'T put honey on it, and don't put an ice pack on it!
Cling film can be put directly on a burn, but it doesn't sound like it needs it (cling film is for when the skin is broken and the idea is to keep infection out.

Here is the CORRECT advice for burns -

www.sja.org.uk/sja/first-aid-advice/effects-of-heat-and-cold/burns-and-scalds.aspx

-----------
Minor burns

Treatment

For minor burns, hold the affected area under cold water for at least 10 minutes or until the pain subsides. Remove jewellery etc. and cover the burn as detailed above.

If a minor burn is larger than a postage stamp it requires medical attention. All deep burns of any size require urgent hospital treatment.

Do not use lotions, ointments and creams.
Do not use adhesive dressings.
Do not break blisters.

IMoveTheStars · 23/04/2010 18:08

It it's more than just a surface blister, get him to A&E just to be sure. Hope he's OK.

Thank you for your replies. We are going to the walk in centre to get it checked

Maybe it could go here?

IMoveTheStars · 23/04/2010 19:31

I don't mean that thread, I mean a theoretical First Aid topic - links to St Johns/NHS site/phone number for NHS direct at the top.
