Is it true a cold can cause hives?

Twice today ds has had masses of hives appear on his face. He hasn't eaten anything unusual, nor come in to contact with anything he hasn't already. Googling around it seems hives can be caused by a virus... is that right? Ds has a slight sniffle but nothing to write home about.

Are you sure it's a cold and not hayfever? hayfever can be like cold and cause hives. I have hayfever and it was pretty bad today. People have been complaining that it is worse this year. My brother got really horrible hives on his face the first time he reacted to pollen. He got some medication from the GP which cleared them up.

I hadn't thought of that, there's lots of asthma, eczema and hayfever in my family, but to be honest I hadn't even noticed ds had the sniffles. He just told me he had a snotty nose, but no other symptoms. Maybe it was a reaction to pollen, he had been in the park most of the morning. They disappeared after I gave him some piriton.
