8 year old with breast pain

A friend has a daughter who is complaining of pain in her nipples. I think this is probably her breasts growing and the start of puberty (the process at least). However she's only 8 1/2. Would you still suggest she goes with her to the GP?

Puberty can start quite early in some girls, especially if they're tall or well-built. Anyone who's had breast tension due to periods or pregnancy knows what a toe-curler it can be but adults tend to take a paracetamol or try to ignore it. If it's upsetting the child or if mum is worried then a trip to the GP could put everyone's mind at rest.

I'd say she's tall for her age but not 'well built' . Her mum says she weighs 4 stone. She's certainly in enough pain to warrant calpol so I'm guessing a visit to the GP can only be a good thing. I assume they will talk to her about the process of growing up if the onset of puberty is what it is.... My daughter is much younger so I've yet to go through this.

It's been noted that girls today... I think it's down to better nutrition.... are reaching puberty earlier than their mothers' generation. I remember getting periods at 10 and being called a freak! Now I think 10 isn't abnormal at all. If this situation flags up anything it's to be prepared to have talks with your own daughter about physical changes, periods etc., much sooner than maybe when you were a kid.
