Can't get fluids into poorly 1yo, help!

DD2 (nearly 1yo) was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection today, after 3 trips to the docs and A&E. She's now on antibiotics but we obviously need to give her as much to drink as possible. Problem is, she absolutely refuses pretty much everything liquid. We have tried water, milk, juice, squash, even nesquik, in bottles, open cups, beakers, on spoons and in a syringe. It's impossible. She just cries and cries and pushes the drink away. Unfortunately I stopped bfing about 3 weeks ago so now I am running out of ideas. She did have a lot of yoghurt at tea time and I hope that will help keep her hydrated, but she only had 2 wet nappies all day and I am rather worried. So if anyone has any tips, I'd be eternally grateful!

Is she eating? Try food that contains a lot of liquid:
soup
jelly
fruit
ice lollies.

DH bought some ice lolly moulds earlier so they'll be ready in the morning.

Fruit is a good idea actually... she loves clementines. Will get DH to buy some first thing tomorrow!

Try BF again if you're comfortable with that? I think you (and her) would still be able to even if stopped for 3 weeks

I did put her on the boob earlier. She clearly remembered what to do and it felt right but there was no milk left.

Schulte, you can get tablets from the GP to build up milk supply called something that sounds like Dom Perignon, that apparently rapidly enhances your milk supply.

In the meantime I would stick her on the boob as often as possible and it will eventually start to come back a bit ...

BoffinMum · 17/04/2010 21:03

BTW even when you think it's dried up, they seem to be able to get something out for ages afterwards.

I wish DS3 would remember what to do, because I stopped about 3 weeks ago as well and he can't do it any more. As he currently has chicken pox and an ear infection and diarrhoea and is off his food as well, he could do with a bit of boob, I reckon.

I would do as other suggested, also try smoothies and even if you're ok with the sugars, flat/nonfizzy Sprite or 7up. You do get lots of fluids from fruits and veg so try pushing those (as suggested) and even doing things like making runny(er) pasta sauce or gravy will help get some extra fluid. Or maybe something silly like a babychino -spoon feeding her the foam? Or whipped cream? (Moo had one of these today and yummed it up despite still being picky abt the foods she's eating after being ill)
Keep trying! and don't lose heart.
hugs

Domperidone (Motilium)dopamine antagonist,an anti-emetic. can have side effect of increase/stimulate lactation but not licensed for that purpose in uk

Oh dear it turns out the reason she didn't want to drink is that she's got her mouth and throat full of cold sores, on top of the urine infection. We've worked out that she'll happily take something shortly after having had painkillers... so it's round the clock calpol and nurofen for the poor little mite. I am so sorry for her, we've spent most of the weekend in A&E trying to find out why she was so desperately unhappy
