So following that Panorama programme, what IS the best thing for DC's to drink?

My kids aren't keen on water, though I appreciate I could go cold turkey on this and they'd probably drink it in the end.

I usually give them no added sugar squash, well diluted.

Is there anything better than his that they might drink? Or is there a squash out there that doesn't harm teeth?

I seem to remember Ribena Toothkind but I can never find it anywhere and it's not available on my Tesco order.

How does milk compare to diluted NAS squash?

I assume fruit juice is worse than squash for teeth? They very rarely have fizzy drinks so that's not an issue.

Thanks in advance

my kids drink water, milk and pure juice (not juice 'drinks')
I didn't grow up with squash so never buy it. They never drink fizzy drinks

surely it's all about balance? and volume and type of container it's put into?

Water is the best, I think, then milk.

Fruit juice is the work of the devil according to my dentist.

Apparently if you give fruite juice you should dilute it with loads of water.

Dentist also says never give diet fizzy drinks, because it's the acid in them that attacks the teeth, but people tend to drink more because they think it's healthier.

My lot drink mostly water or milk. They do get fruit juice or really dilute squash, but usually only once a day with a meal. If they are thirsty in the day they get water, unless I am feeling soft.

My mum thinks I am mean because she tasted some of the diluting juice I made for them and said you could hardly tast the flavour. I told her that was the idea!

mine drink water, on occasion - about once every couple of months during winter and once a month during summer -I buy Rocks organic squash and they have one drink of that a day with a meal until it's finished. I am a bit mean about it but they don't seem to mind!
I never use no added sugar anything as it is full of nasties like aspartame, I'd prefer they had proper sugar less often.

Wow I'm mean

Only water during the week and milk with breakfast, then 1 glass of squash per day at the weekend. Free choice when we go out for a meal.

Kids are 11, 9 and 7 and I've always done this - they haven't complained yet! Maybe because I don't keep fizzy drinks in the house - out of sight, out of mind?

Don't talk about biscuits & cakes though

mankyscotslass · 15/04/2010 09:43

Yes, don't get the "no added sugar" stuff, its full of rubbish. I tend to go for the hi juice stuff, but will investigate this Rocks - never heard of it before.

DD refuses milk but drinks lots of water. She is only allowed water at school, juice and squash are banned. At breakfast she generally has either apple or orange juice and isn't interested in fizzy pop because, I think, I don't drink it. DH had a can of coke a couple of weeks ago, she tried it and really didn't like it

MmeLindt · 15/04/2010 10:03

Surely proper orange juice is ok at meal times if they brush their teeth afterwards?

I buy expensive orange juice and I know that DH finds it difficult to get one in UK that meets his exacting standards (he is a juice snob)

If you mix it with sparkling water it tastes really nice.

My DC mainly drink water though. Occasionally Orangina or Capri Sonne as a treat.

MyBoo · 15/04/2010 10:03

I am mean as well. Water or Milk is all that is drunk in our house. I have a 9 year old nephew that will actually ask for a bottle of water over a bottle of pop when you are out and my sister has always done the same as me.

Didn't watch the programme but mine have milk, diluted fruit juice and water

Bonsoir · 15/04/2010 10:09

Tap water
Semi-skimmed milk

Meglet · 15/04/2010 10:14

Mine have smoothie / fresh orange with breakfast.

Water all day long.

Milk at tea time.

mankyscotslass · 15/04/2010 10:17

Apparently fizzy water is a big no no too.

MMe Lindt, I thnk they say to rinse with water after fruit juice, and that you should never brush straight after eaating.

Seems you can't do right for doing wrong.

You know what.

Bugger it.

Will give them beer and wine.

I am going to go with my very own philosophy of life. Everything in moderation.

And don't get your knickers in a twist
