Hacking cough in 2 yo DD, keeping her up at night

DD has yet another hacking cough, which is now keeping her up at night. She is coughing so much she is retching. SHe just woke up and is really hot, but that might just be the exertion of all the coughing.

This is becoming a bi monthly (is that right for every other month?) occurrence. We've taken DD to the doctors. One time he gave her an inhaler, but this isn't helping at the moment. Last time and maybe the time before she had anti-b's, but I don't want her to keep having them without knowing if there is anything else going on.

I know the inhaler didn't seem to help but could it be asthma? It's very prevalent in our family (I don't have it but my mum, bro and sis all have or have had it).

More importantly is there anything else that we can do to ease the coughing? We gave her ibruprofen tonight, and she has settled down now but don't want to keep having her wake up (I'm sleeping badly enough as it is at the moment).

Do you know what worked for me and my DD to clear a really bad cough and it sounds stupid!

But a friend in America recommended it!

Put vicks on the feet then socks at night, it took about 3 days and it cleared.

I'm asthmatic so I was worried when my dd and me had it bad also pregnant at the time!

I didn't have Vicks rub to hand so used baby snuffle which might be why it took so many days to clear! I suspect its probably something to do with the sensor points in the feet?

Both of us were coughing so much we were sick! Got to be worth a try, I hope it clears up.

Thanks for the replies. The vicks thing is a good idea. I will try it tomorrow.

Took her to the doctors today, he has given her anti b's again and another inhaler. Not sure of the names, but she had the blue one before now he has given her a beige one (sorry, can't remember the name and am now ensconsed on the sofa!). She has gone to sleep for now, as she is so knackered but still coughing. I will try the vicks tomorrow. Is she too young to try steaming with a bowl and towel? Our bathroom doesn't really get steamy as it has a vent.
