I think DD has a hernia, should she go to her dancing?

I am almost certain she does. Just need to see the doc for confirmation, the appointment is tommorrow afternoon.
But she has her Highland Dancing lesson today.
Should she go?
I don't know how long she has had it, well, it must hve been there since birth, no, but I have not spotted it before now.
Must have been a voitting bug that brought it out last week.
Now it pops out when she is giggling (that is how I spotted it at bed time last night) and presumably when she is shouting.
Surely jumping about would not be good for it.
Or am I being silly, it must have been there for a while already but has not been any bother?
She is 3.5yrs

where is it? My DS had a hernia in his belly button from birth, didn't stop him doing anything and it just went away itself.

twinklingfairy · 14/04/2010 16:01

Right hand side of her groin.
Bigger than a big marble.
I had one once as a teenager, it went away on its own too.
Do you think this one might?
Cos it was brought on, I think by her being so sick, as mine was by a coughing cold thing.

DS, 18 months and 4 weeks early, had one, from birth. He had to get operated on, in the end they did both sides.
I think that is why I am worrying over DD.

TwinklingFairy - how did you/she get on - did she go?

twinklingfairy · 14/04/2010 23:05

No, I decided that she should not bother this week.
I just don't know what the lump is, and I am not happy with it so didn't want to take any risks.
Sis has made me question whether it is a hernia or not though. She reckons it is too low.
I guess the doc will tell me tomorrow. But he is an awful one for saying, 'don't worry, it will be fine.'
I am good at that attitude too, DH wonders at my lack of concern for my own health I am always sure that it will all work out for the best.
But it is different with your own.
Common colds I take in my stride, but lumps on her wee body? Well that is a different matter.
I have no doubt that they will tell me, 'see how it develops over the next few weeks. You never know it might just go away.'
But what kind of a way is that to treat it!?

Cheers for asking though

Don't really know much about hernia's apart from the one my son had - it was softish and I was able to press it back in. I guess if it pops in and out it can't be anything too serious. Maybe try another doc if you're concerned.

PS keep us posted on what the doc says

AlicesWonderland · 15/04/2010 11:28

Hi ds hada hernia about his belly button (umbillical hernia) which we found when he was 4

He could carry on as normal, was sent for a scan to confirm and they chose to operate not because it was a prob or would stop him doing anything but just incase it got worse later on iykwim

They did the op as a day appt and he came home at tea time 2 weeks recovery and has been fine ever since

I also had a hernia op the other year and after they had diagnosed it wasn't tld to avoid doing any activity hth

MumInBeds · 15/04/2010 11:34

I hope you get answers from your doc today.

twinklingfairy · 15/04/2010 21:13

Doc confirmed that it is a hernia.
She has been reffered to the specialist and we will hear in due course, ie ages!
But he did say not to worry about stopping her from doing any of her normal activities.
He said it was only a little one and that there was not any real worry about it getting stuck or anything.
It had, of course, calmed down by the time he saw it. Isn't that just typical!
I swore to him it was twice the size just last night!

But thank you for your concern.
I will bookmark this thread, if you would like. But I would imagine it is all going to be months down the line before anything is done.
He did say that surgery was prob going to be the end result though. yikes!

Good news then, fingers x'd it goes away on its own.

pilates · 17/04/2010 08:21

I was told if hernia's do not go by the age of 4 or 5 they have to operate. My daughter had an umbilical hernia and had it removed as a day patient on a Friday and was back to school on the Monday.
