helping newborn with trapped wind?

my little guy is 2 days old. He's been feeding almost nonstop from the moment he was born and, perhaps as a result, seems to be suffering from bad wind pains.

i can't get him settled down to sleep for longer than a few minutes and we're both suffering now! short of keeping him upright and rubbing his back, do you have any tips on how I can help him with this?

thanks in advance.

I used to put the baby over my knee, face down and rub her back. Got some very satisfying burps that way.

rubyslippers · 14/04/2010 14:09

is he bottle or breastfed?

if he seems in pain you can try infacol before each feed

also a good burping position is over your shoulder so there is a bit of gentle pressure on his tummy

rubbing his back in circular motions may help more than rubbing up and down

sabinar · 14/04/2010 14:12

he's breastfed. because he's still so little the over knee/ shoulder positions leavehim v unsupported which worries me. wasn't sure if infacol was ok this early... will look into that. thx

you can use infacol from birth

is he weeing and pooing ok?

ReneRusso · 14/04/2010 14:22

Try to take a break from feeding so he can digest his food.
Rub his tummy with a backwards C shape.
Lie him on your arm tummy down, you can still support his head on your forearm.

Have you got a local bfing counsellor? Many will come around and have a chat with you. It could be useful.

Try your local branch of nct or

la lache league or

ABM

LLL and NCT often have local groups where you can meet up with other Mums and Mums-to-Be.

Keep going, sounds like you are doing a fab job

Oh bless. poor you. have images of him being so tiny. oh i do love them when they are really really tiny.
so how are you burping him then ? in what positions ?
there are a couple that look like they might hurt him, but honestly they don't. and they are very effective.

ok, tried a few different burping positions, got a poo and now - sweet relief- he's asleep. i'd better go do the same while I can! thank you all!

also an infacol enthusiast (wasn't so much first time round, sort of interestingly) (it takes some time to build up so stick with it)
anyway (mummyelk digresses) back to the point

  • sit him up on your lap, one hand supporting his head from the front, pat and stroke his back and put pressure on his tummy from the front...(hard to describe but you've seen a thousand mums do it i'm sure)
  • face down on lap one is good
  • lying on their back whilst you cycle their legs in the air, or just bend their knees in towards their chest and back out again
  • over the shoulder is a wonderfully supportive one, if you glance over your shoulder as you do it, you should see their head is supported
  • the i love you baby massage is nice, see here
  • tiger/lion/leopard in the tree hold (as described by ruby above, laying on tum along your arm
  • DH also swears by holding them up in front of you, and moving them in a circular fashion either like a clock hand around, or away from you and towards you.

Gosh it's quite hard to describe these isn't it? sorry.
Good luck
