DS is 19wks and has had a chest infection. He has been given this antibiotic, started taking on saturday morning and since yesterday his bowls have gone on overdrive. He is a bf baby, normally goes once a day give or take and his poo is pretty normal for a bf baby.

Yesterday he went 4 times? And since this morning, he has been 8 times? maybe even 9, i have lost count. It is watery and of varying amount.I know diarrhoea is a normal side effect but how much/how long?

He is feeding continuously, presumably as he is thirsty, and he is weeing, so far as I can tell, although his nappies are not sodden given we are changing him so often. His fontanelle is not sunken.

His temperament is ok. he is crying a lot more, but that is mostly because he wants to be actually attached to my boobs. He will only settle on me.

When should i become more concerned and seek medical advice?

Can you call your doctor's advice line?

Antibitocs kill the good bacteria in a gut along with the bad, so runny bowels are common after AB's, but I'd ask to speak to a professional as your ds is quite young.

They will want to know how many wet nappies he's had in 24 hours. I'd keep feeding him as much as he wants. It sounds like you are doing all the right things.

Is he crying because he is in pain? chest infections can be painful.

Hope he's better soon.

he is more upset than in pain. The chest infection is the result of longer term issues with mucous and wheezing and was dx as a chest infection just as it turned into one i think. Yesterday he was much much less grimbly, and the mucous has almost gone, so he should be feeling better, not worse?

I have been trying to keep an eye on the wet nappy situation, but hard when his poo is so runny.

nhs direct self help said A&E , that cannot be right, he is sleeping peacefully on me (for the first time since 4am yesterday morning!). I am going to put that on hold as he has not pooed now for around 2.5 hours.
