Bloody Impetigo AGAIN!!!!

marsden14 · 12/04/2010 21:24

I am absolutely fed up of Impetigo. Since my DD starting school last September, she has had it 5 times.

She woke up this morning saying mummy I think I have impetigo, I looked at her lip (oh by the way its always in the same place) and low and behold, there is the start of impetigo. I called the nurse straight away, and they did me another prescription for more cream, and medication, which makes her non contagious in 48 hours. I asked to speak to the doctor and told him I had investigated online that you can put a cream up the nostrils which kills the impetigo before it starts for good. So he gave me some of that aswell.

Does anyone else suffer with repetitive impetigo?? I am so glad she is off school this week, and Im off work all week (its both our birthdays on wednesday) or Id be looking at unpaid time off again as she cannot go to school.
xx

Are you sure it's impetigo and not herpes simplex (a cold sore)?

marsden14 · 12/04/2010 22:02

Yes a doctor has seen it, and done swabs.

My DS constantly had this in the same area - back and forth to the dr and dp insisted on an appointment with a dermatologist. Dermatologist said although it looked like impetigo it was actually dermatitis. He gave us a lotion to put on ds' face any time it looked a bit inflamed and so far we have had only one outbreak in the last 6 months.

I know exactly how you feel and it's not pleasant for your dd.

See if you can be referred to a dermatologist - btw our GP was very about referring us and said that the dermatologist would tell us the same and there was nothing they could do.

leoleosuperstar · 12/04/2010 22:06

Cross post sorry - maybe the skin is not fully healing then which is allowing the bacteria in? Maybe a cream to moisturise the area everyday to create a barrier?

sanfairyann · 12/04/2010 22:11

the nose cream stuff is very good. that's where it lurks then they pick their nose - mmmm nice - and it starts all over again. sorted out my ds's recurrent impetigo. good luck with it

marsden14 · 12/04/2010 22:14

Could you recommend anything?
Ive started putting the cream up the nostrils today and have to 3 times a day for a week, and obviously finish the medication which is 5 days worth. My dd is so good, but knows her impetigo means she cant go to school for a while.
I think if it flares up again, I will insist on a referral to a dermatoligist.

Ah ok - I would be asking for a course of oral antibiotics if it recurs again as the topical treatment doesn't seem to be completely clearing it. Hopefully if you can also eradicate the staph in the nose then it is less likely to recur.

marsden14 · 12/04/2010 22:21

Fingers crossed.
DD doesnt like having to have to medicine or cream up the nose, so maybe if I keep going on about hygeine, not picking noses (yer right) and putting dirty things in mouths, we can beat this together. Soooo frustrating. Thanks all for your comments.

So minthumbug, does he still get it now? How long did it go between bouts?

I had several bouts of reoccuring impetigo (I work in a school)and the only thing that cures it is oral antibiotics. The cream doesn't make any difference to me.

marsden that is so awful
my DS has had impetigo only once & that was bad enough (he was 4yo)

i would definitely get a referral to dermatologist, 5 times is too much

i think it is one of the worst illnesses my DCs have had

suzier1982 · 26/04/2010 18:52

Hi marsden14, how is your LO now? My DD age 4.5 has also had recurring impetigo over the last year and we have been back and fore to the doctors for cream/antibiotics. One locum doctor did mention diabetes and checked her urine - which was clear. Everytime i take her in, they say, its something she will grow out of and that the germ must be living in her nose and everytime a cold comes on, impetigo starts, normally at either side of her mouth or on her chin. It is driving me mad! I do the changing beds everyday/washing at 60, not sharing towels etc. None of us have ever caught it.

Mioo · 27/04/2010 21:04

My ds is 3 and he doesn't go to nursery, he has impetigo for the 4th time!,
Since march he has been on and off with creams and antibiotics, the only thing that works is antibiotics, but once he finishes it
after 3 days it appears again!! I'm desperate and the gp it's not helpful.

Nat1279 · 16/12/2018 15:04

Hello, I’m wondering if you were able to cure the impetigo? Did you have the nose cultured? Does it still return? Did you use oral antibiotics?

Jessiii · 17/12/2018 05:14

I had this for years, I had swab tests that showed the bacteria wasn't living in my nostrils, I couldn't understand where it was coming from as I'm very clean and would wash all towels, flannels etc immediately, then I realised one day when I accidently scratched under my nose with my nail and impetigo started again, i figured it must be present in my nails, and when i read about it, regular hand washing doesn't clean the nails properly. I bought a good nail brush and with soap and water really scrubbed my nails thoroughly, I've not had it since!

Nat1279 · 17/12/2018 16:11

Brilliant! What a simple fix. Do you brush daily?

Have others had any luck with natural supplements or remedies?

Thank you

Jessiii · 21/12/2018 09:37

I brushed daily whilst I was getting over that particular flare up, now I just do a few times a week if that but it seems to have not returned at all thank god. I think some people have the bacteria present in their nose, and if this is ruled out like mine was the nails may be the next place to look.
