severe D&V - would you be worried?

DD is 2.7. She has had vomiting since Sunday. She had diarrhoea yesterday, and probably would still have it if she had eaten anything, there is certainly "leakage" from that area from time to time (sorry if TMI). She cannot keep down anything neither food nor drink, although will often sleep after drinking, then wake after 45 minutes to throw up, so she is absorbing something.

She was seen by a doctor yesterday and again today. She is not dehydrated according to the professionals, and has passed urine three times today, it is bright yellow, but not orange like it was yesterday so she must be doing ok.

Her skin is fully elastic, her hands/feet do not feel cold, she has saliva and (some) tears. The blood returns to fingers/toes immediately if you squeeze them.

However today she has been awake for about 4 out of 24 hours, with occasionaly other wakings to vomit/wee etc. She has tried o eat, which made her brighter for about 30 minutes, and made me think she was recovering a bit. But then she vomited it all again and went back to sleep

She barely speaks, she just cries and nods or shakes her head when I ask her something. Sometimes she doesn't even bother answering. Her eyes also seem slightly sunken and have bags around them (dark bags).

the doctor said no to worry unless she becomes more listless, but we are talking about a 2 year old who never sits still or stops talking, so how much more unresponsive can you get?

If she hadn't perked up for a while this afternoon I would have taken her to A&E for another assessment.

I trust the doctors, but admit to worrying in case they have missed something. Is she just lethargic because she has no energy going in? or would you be worried?

WWYD?

Hiya, I would take her back to the gp in this situation, it sounds to me as tho she is at the " more listless" point.

More to the point, you are worried - you know her best - you've answered your own question. Take her in.

Good Luck, hope she's feeling better soon!

Mamalade · 07/04/2010 21:46

You poor thing bees.I am loathe to offer advice as I'm not a medical professional.
I try to get mine to suck a lollipop to just boost their sugars if they have a lot of v or d.can she take sips of water? If she is wanting to eat,I would give her anything she feels like.If any of it is absorbed,it'll do her some good.
Her lethargy could be purely a lack of energy from the v&d.
Every mum knows their own child best.If you are panicked or seriously worried,go and sit in A&E and don't move til she's been seen.
It'll be worth it even if only for your own peace of mind.
Very best of luck to you Bees.Let us know how you get on.

Thank you. I realise no-one can really offer advice, it is just better than going over and over it with DH.

She had a lolly and then an icepop yesterday but because she was sick straight after she thinks they make her sick

today she ate marmite on toast and then twiglets, but they came up too

everything seems to come up at some point, though obviously some does get absorbed.

I fluctuate between being panicked and being rational. It is the first time dd has been seriously ill, and she is my pfb so I am at a loss. My family also cannot offer much help because my 93 year old grandma is staying with them, and they don't want to put her at any risk. DH works all day so I am left alone staring at the walls and hoping I am doing something right

But two doctors have said not to worry, that it is the dehydration that is the concern.

She is just so pitiful and thin

She has refused water since yesterday herbie, and only has juice. It doesnt seem to make much difference, though I could make it stronger

i don't think i'd be dashing off to a&e just yet if it were me

mine had a hideous bug last year which was very similar in terms of not keeping anything down, and how long it went on for

I got one of those medicine syringes and gave ds1 complan, 2.5ml at a time!!

can be used with juice too. was basically just as much as I could give wihtout him throwing it back up again.

thisisyesterday · 07/04/2010 22:03

ohh, meant to say, get some dioralyte too

Mamalade · 07/04/2010 22:06

Can you get Dioralyte sachets over the counter where you are?You mix it with cooled boiled water.Tiny sips of that over a few hours is great for rehydrating little ones.

Is she comfortable when she's asleep?I'd let her sleep as much as she can as long as she's comfortable and i would keep a very close eye on her through the night.

You have to trust your instincts. If you are worried, have her seen again.

beammeupscotty · 07/04/2010 22:32

Vomiting for 4 days is a bit excessive. 2-3 days is the norm. If she has a temp, vomiting and no diarrhoea at 4 days it might be a wee infection. Is the vomiting easing off - this is the normal pattern? If you feel sure it is a bug, ie no tummy pain/distension, then it is all about keeping hydrated as advised above - def dioralyte and small frequent amounts. Sleeping lots is normal. If still vomiting tomorrow get checked out again.

Morning Bees,how is she today?

beesonmummyshead · 08/04/2010 15:45

well we ended up in A&E last night as she was completely unresponsive to anything we asked, she just cried and said her tummy hurt. The doctors were lovely and we were seen very quickly. She is fine hydration-wise and the doc thinks the tummy pain and listlessness is normal, he is suggesting rotavirus.

She is still sick today, though not as often, thank goodness. Unfortunately for us, we now have the most hideous diarrhoea which could clear a house in seconds

I am much less worried now the unrelentless vomiting has ceased though. Thank you for your advice and concern.
