Is this the start of chicken pox?

DD has been tired and grumpy all day (even had an extra nap), I had put this down to too much excitment and chocolate at the weekend with the grandparents visiting. However, this evening I noticed that she has too red spots on her back that look like insect bites. I can't imagine where she would have been bitten (although we did go to a farm park thing yesterday). The spots themselves don't seem to be bothering her, but she wasn't herself today.

I know this is a long short any ideas if this is the start of chicken pox? We haven't knowingly been in contact with anyone with chicken pox, but with the farm visit and a trip to soft play, it's not impossible.

do they look like this this

Joolyjoolyjoo · 05/04/2010 20:42

Does sound like it- this is how DS's spots looked before they developed blisters 24 hrs later- I wondered if he had flea bites for afew seconds(until I realised it was extremely unlikely!_

i would do a full body check and see if you can find anymore? i love a good chicken pox hunt

lobsters · 05/04/2010 20:50

The outside is a bigger spot and redder, there is something in the middle, but too small to tell what it is. But could be, when do they get itchy?

That sounds like how it started with my DD. You might well be in no doubt when you look again in the morning.

Couldn't see any more spots, although it was tricky looking at a writhing crying baby (she is 15mo), we've even started having tantrums today, we became those parents in the supermarket.

(oh god I'm going to get flamed for this), I'll have to text her nanny and make sure she's had it. I get up for work before DD wakes up, DH will be here, but DD could have limbs falling off before he'd think we'd need to do anything

I thought my dds spots were bed bug bites at first and mortally offended a friend we had just been staying with by suggesting as much to her (lots of bed bugs in London, but she was not happy!)So they do look like insect bites to start with.It was my next door neighbour,a grandma, who said "that looks like chicken pox".Get some oats for the bath (put in a sock) get some piriton for if it gets really bad (not nice for nappy wearers if they have lots of spots on the vulva).Good thing is the worst is over pretty quickly.

Sorry one more question, if it is chicken pox and I've had it, can I still carry it? My boss is pregnant, just wondered if i need to warn her

OOOOH i'm not sure on that one, i would prob mention it to her, just to be on the safe side, how pregnant is she? I think if she is near the end of her pregnancy she it is less likely to cause problems. Of course if she has already had it she may have immunity which she can be tested for!

lobsters · 05/04/2010 21:17

I'm guessing about 24 weeks, she couldn't remember last time i asked, I'll e-mail her tonight

When u email her, do mention the chicken pox, at least then she can make an informed descision, whether there is a risk or not. I imagine ur lo is asleep now, but if poss without waking her you could go check to see if there are more#/

lobsters · 05/04/2010 21:48

Nothing on her palms or face, I'm not tempted to look further as she's sleeping beautifully

OP posts:
cookielove · 05/04/2010 21:55

i can see why, they do usually start on the tummy, and the respond well to heat, i assume she is in a sleep bag or well tucked it, i don't think i would risk it either, you'll prob just have to wait till the morning me thinks

lobsters · 05/04/2010 21:59

Sleeping bag, and a vest on under her PJ's, so a performance to get to look at her tummy. Nanny is pre-warned, waiting for my boss to look at her blackberry, but she is an addict so won't take long

ooooh you are so taking the right plan of action, def leave the sleeping one alone.

well i hope it all works out for you

lobsters · 06/04/2010 11:30

Looks like we've escaped this time, no more spots, and baby a lot happier. Clearly a post chocolate low, and we've learnt for next time
