Rash and fever for a week, coming and going

Ds2 is 2.9, he started being unwell about a week ago - high temp (39.5) which responded to calpol and nurofen combination.

It gradually eased off over the next few days, with a rash appearing on Tuesday, on his face and body. Just a normal, slightly raised, blotchy spotty rash, fading under pressure etc.
He's been clingy as well which is normal I guess. I thought he was recovering fine by Friday but yesterday he was sick in the evening, just once (too much chocolate?) and then I realised his temp was 38.6, so more nurofen - he slept fine, till 2am when he was very cheerful and wanted to get up but his temperature was OK - I gave him 2.5ml nurofen then to be safe.

He was fine all morning, then about 1pm had a temp of 38.8, so more nurofen - and the rash on his cheeks is really red again - this was getting lighter till today, now it seems to have come back.
It was mainly one cheek today though so I wondered about teething, but he has most of his teeth - and if he is getting the last back molars it is very early to do so. The rash looks like it is both cheeks again now.
It's mainly gone on the rest of his body.

I'm confused, slightly anxious and don't know what proper course of action is - could it be an ear infection or something, I thought it was a virus but now it seems not to have gone after all.

Any thoughts appreciated before I fall down that familiar well of guilt and confusion, Oh yes every time one of them has a temperature! thanks.

btw it looks very much like slapped cheek, but I thought he had had that last year...also, i thought the fever wasn't meant to last with that?

I don't know what slapped cheek is but I know that my friend's dd who is nearly 3 has had a similar thing this last week, her temp has been up and down (peaked at 41.0) and her ds keeps saying she feels cold when she's not. I don't think she has had the rash tho.

I don't think your DS is too young to be getting his back teeth. My DD2 is 2.6 and she is working on them now.

Might be worth calling NHS direct for advice?

thankyou very much,

41 sounds very scary

he was up to 38.8 again last night but OK this morning...it just seems a bit random. The rash has gone now, just about...I think it must just have been a strange virus.

If it gets worse again I'll take him to the GP tomorrow, but hoping we have shifted it! At least it doesn't seem like a bacterial infection, with the random temps.

Hope your friend's child is better soon too.

Fliight - Just check this out in case you havent mentioned all you LOs symptoms in your post. It is one of the few really horrible reasons children have ongoing fevers. As yours responded to calpol probably not Kawasaki disease

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Kawasaki-disease/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

but check out the symptoms as most fevers only last 2-3 days and Kawaski an absolute stinker and often missed.

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Kawasaki-disease/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

may work better

Thanks Scotty, that is really interesting - I don't think his symptoms were as severe as those but will definitely keep it in mind if I hear of that type of thing.
I like to have a medical dictionary inside my head, you know!
Sounds like a really nasty one doesn't it.

Ds is much better now - still a bit grumpy but no longer spotty and no longer hot.

Mum however has had a temp, plus very achy joints - so I suspect fifth!

Hi, just to say my son has been exactly the same now for three weeks, this started with a viral rash since then I think he is recovering and then after a few days he goes down hill again and his temperature rises! he is laid up on the sofa as I am writing this... Think whatever viral infection this is is hitting them hard and a pig to get over..
