I am feeling very guilty! my 18m DD jammed her finger in the door, the door I was closing! No real blood but the base of her fingernail popped out so we had a trip to A and e for a local anaesthetic to lever it back under the skin. This was on monday and we were told that it would drop off eventually but were suprised to see it was gone after the bath tonight only 5 days later without any blood or bruising. It looks clean but sore! Tried to phone NHS direct but they are too busy and onle dealing with emergencies.
Am I right in just keeping it clean? Not sure about dressing it? She kept the big bandage of fine when it first happened but wasnt too keen on the little plasters after this and kept pulling them off...
Also.... Will it grow back???? I have major guilt issues already and would hate to think she will have a permanent reminder! My poor poor baby!

ow!

yes they grow back quicker than you think

I cannot remember what we did about dressings. I'd probably be tempted to put something on it (loosely) until the first bit of the nail starts growing back, just in case the nail bed gets hurt. But I can't remember if that was recommended or not.

these things happen

My dd trapped a little girls finger in a door and the nail came out . We went to A£E and they checked the nail bed was still there and not damaged. She lost her nail a few days later and now, a few months later it has grown back! Has a slight ridge but looks fine considering.

My brother lost the entire top of his little finger off in a door at about the same age (bone was fine, but tip, nail and all the skin down to the first joint came off) I did it by accident

The doctors thought the nail wouldn't grow back because he'd lost everything, but it did eventually, bit crooked, but definitely there.

DS lost his entire big toenail 2 years ago. It took ages to grow back fully (they do take longer than fingernails) and had a ridge for a while, but 2 years on you cannot tell the difference.
