Am I over reacting?

DD 10 months has been vomiting since Thursday. She is already taking penicillin as last Sunday she had a temp of 40 plus and was diagnosed with an ear infection.

At first I thought she was being sick because of coughing. But then DH told me she bumped her head badly half an hour before, so we took her to the doctors. They checked her out and said she was fine. Yesterday she didn't eat much and was sick about 6 times, but she was OKish in herself. This morning she seemed dehydrated and very sleepy plus her nappy was mostly dry with a very small amount of strong wee. We managed to get her to have a bf and a bit of water too. She was still a bit floppy so we took her back to the doctors. First she said it was a urine infection, but I pointed out she was taking penicillin, so the doctor says it is a reaction to the penicillin. But then told us to finish it and to make sure she has her dose after food. She has only been sick once today, but she wont eat or drink anything. She has done 2 "milk" poo nappies and that is it.

What can I do to tempt her to eat and drink? She is really lethargic now and very cuddly. She normally is a "bye see you later mummy, I have things to do" type of baby.

I am getting worried, but she is our first baby so I am very good at over reacting!

is her fontanelle sunken when you run your fingers over the top of her head? I'd be taking her to A&E rather quickly, they go downhill very fast at that age and she sounds to me to be dehydrated.

thelittlebluepills · 03/04/2010 13:49

go to A&E - you know your baby and you know she is not well

CarGirl · 03/04/2010 13:51

I would take her to A&E too it could be delayed concussion and if she's been thowing up her antibiotics then they will not necessarily have worked.

Goingspare · 03/04/2010 13:52

Go to A&E.

Also, penicillin wont necessaril;y be the RIGHT antibiotic if it were a UTI. Ask for a sample to be dip tested and then sent away for a growth analysis.

I think I'd take her to get checked out too, even if it is just to put your mind at rest. Babies can go downhill quickly and, as they can't really tell us what is up, I think it's important to keep vigilant.

Is the vomiting part of her original symptoms, or did it only start after taking the penicillin? If they think it might be a reaction to the penicillin, why wouldn't they change to a diffrent antibiotic that might not upset her so much? Does she still have a temperature?

I would take her back-if you are worried is there a sick kids type hospital near you? I'm afraid I would be tempted to go straight there, as you already seem to have been given 3 conflicting "diagnoses"- urine infection (did they take a sample?), ear infection and now possible reaction to penicillin, but advising still to take the medicine?? Too confusing for me- I'd be inclined to see a paed specialist if possible. Children are too precious!

Thanks every one.

Sunday, was just an ear infection.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday day time she was her normal happy self.

Thursday night she started coughing a bit was then sick. This was after she had hit her head. Doctor told me that she had given herself a shock and therefore started vomiting.

Friday, not too bad. Crawling around a bit quiet, but not too bad. Sick a few times. Didn't eat much.

Saturday. Sick once. Not eating or drinking much and floppy.

No this morning she took her nappy off, looked saw she was red and said urine infection, no test or anything. I then pointed out she was on penicillin, so she said it was unlikely and told me it was a reaction to the penicillin. She then looked in her ears and told me her ear infection had cleared up, but to finish the medicine.

DH has managed to get her to have a bottle of formula while I have been typing.

Urine infections in babies are SERIOUS. My little girl was in hospital for a WEEK on IV antibiotics at 15 months old, it is highly likely that the antibiotic she is on is the "domestos" kills 99% of all germs dead one, BUT the UTI my daughter had didn't respond to it...she needed the 1% one.

Please, go adn get her seen properly. It is NOT like a "bit of cystitus"

You are not over reacting. You are her mummy and you are worried. Those gut feelings are there for a reason. Have her checked out. I would also suggest having her sipping at cooled boiled water. A little and often.

Hope she is better soon. Poor little poppet

FabIsGettingThere · 03/04/2010 14:43

She needs to see another doctor.

Babies of this age should only go 24 hours without liquids iirc.

Go to A&E please.

ilove · 03/04/2010 22:05

How is she?

She is back to normal now, after a couple of days feeling poorly. Thanks so much everyone for there support, again so sorry I didn't post back it was really rude of me!
