ok I have put this on another site so apologies if you have seen these before! I forgot abotu this board when i put them on there!
I am worried abotu the fact that my daughter is a blue/grey/orange colour in her feet and lower legs and her hands and lower arms. She doesnt have to be cold. These pictures were taken on getting her out of bed this morning.
I have taken her to the doc before (5 weeks old) as she was going blue in her face but he told me not to worry and sent me away feeling a fool .
I am still worried though and was thinking about going to the HV and maybe showing her the pics (or her feet if they are like this when we get there) but I know the doctor just told me it was normal for the to go blue sometimes if they were cold etc.

so before I make a fool of myself going back is this a normal level of blue?? (i promise I am not insane).

I would go and see the health visitor, with pics, I have never seen that before.

fernie3 · 31/03/2010 09:57

thanks! I seem to have messed up the second one... the link should be

i22.photobucket.com/albums/b337/fernie3/GetAttachmentaspx.jpg

hmm lets see if that works..

Yes, take the pictures and go to the doctors.

I'm sure there was a thread about this the other day, it was apparently something that they grow out of but it needs documenting in case treatment is required - sorry not to be more help.

Hopefully it's not serious at all.

Lulumaam · 31/03/2010 09:59

I've seen that once, in a friend's DD.. her mum and grandma have Reynauds, and i think it was a circulatory issue, but nothing sinister, i would go back to your GP or H V and if your GP does not take it seriously, then see a different doc or ask for a referral to a peadiatrician

it is not normal for a baby's extremities to be like this, but it does not necessarily mean anything sinister

but you do need a proper medical explanation and diagnosis

piprabbit · 31/03/2010 09:59

Definitely take the pictures with you when you next see you HV or GP.

bumpybecky · 31/03/2010 09:59

I would take the photos to the HV or a different doctor. While you there tell them again about going blue in the face.

How old is she?

PictureThis · 31/03/2010 10:01

If her feet were warm when this picture was taken then I would be taking her back to the GP. If I saw a baby at home with extremeties like this I would inclined to have it reviewed by a doctor. Maternal instinct shouldn't be ignored on the whole.

Megglevache · 31/03/2010 10:03

Fernie, I would take her to the docs aswell.

I've not seen that before. Ho wis she in herself?

fernie3 · 31/03/2010 10:04

Lulumaam thats is a good possibility as my grandmother has reynauds (although I have never seen her hands go anything other than white no blue or orange and she only really has problems with her fingers).

Bumpybecky she is 13 months now.

I will take her to the HV drop in clinic tomorrow as it does seem to cause her some discomfort lately which it didnt before (I had hoped as another poster said that it was just something she would grow out of!).

Fliight · 31/03/2010 10:07

I think the child who grew out of it took a few years to do so, if that helps.

Take the pictures with you, they are important, it's unlikely it'll happen while you are there!

EightiesChick · 31/03/2010 10:10

Either way I think you should see someone again. The photos are very useful as symptoms always maddeningly disappear as soon as you are in front of a healthcare professional IME. The doctor you saw at 5 weeks sounds hugely unhelpful - it has clearly not stopped you worrying, so be persistent and get someone to explain what might be causing this. My DS is 14 months and I would ring my HV who is very nice if this was affecting him. His feet have never looked like that.

princessmel · 31/03/2010 10:11

ds2's hands are like that sometimes. He's 5 months.

I have Raynauds. dd 's feet used to be blue a lot, always cold. Even after a nap in a sleepsuit, socks, grobag etc.
I took her to a cranial osteopath and they sorted her out.

fernie3 · 31/03/2010 10:15

princessmel what is a cranial otsteopath?

megglevache she seems fine in herself although she has been VERY upset going out in the cold weather which makes it alot worse. She is wrapped up in gloves, blankets etc in the pushchair but her hands are still frozen and blue so she screams until we get home (I have avoided taking her out apart from school run over winter and our heating bill is now massive from keeping the house warm!). I will take her back the last doctor was very unhelpful and dismissed the whole thing as soon as I opened my mouth he even mentioned it again when I went back (for a totally different reason with my husband!) as the baby who "may or may not have been turning blue haha" which obviously put me off going back again before now. I will take the pics to show the HV although they are that colour most of the time now to some extent - sometimes worse than others so with a bit of luck she will see in person as well.

DD's hands turned bright Smurf blue once, when she was a couple of months old.

I shat myself, but it turns out it is relatively normal. Annoyingly, I can't remember the name of the syndrome.

Do get it checked but don't freak out.

princessmel · 31/03/2010 10:29

I'm not too sure of the medical description!!
She helps people with backs etc!
Well any pain really. Very gentle.
I took ds1 and dd for problem with feeding when they were newborn and my friend used her for colic.

She was lovely.

PictureThis · 31/03/2010 14:21

what a helpful GP I'd make the appointment with another in the practice.

mummytopebs · 31/03/2010 20:13

OMG there must be sommet in the water lol

I had a thread a couple of weeks ago about my dd 10 weeks left arm and hand. Hers go blue when she feeds or cold and 2 weeks ago when she was having a poo her arm and left hand went completely black for about 5 mins.

She was admitted to hospital and had heart tests and chest x rays and bloods and everything ok. We went to see the cdonsultant yesterday who has said raynards and hopefully she will grow out of it.

Just out of interest have the people with experience of raynards extremities went black or swell? As dd arm swells when she is having a poo.

I would take back to gp and ask for referral cos dd had heart scans just to double check. Keep me updated and i will you, its scary isnt it

princessmel · 31/03/2010 21:08

That's ing mummytopebs!!!

I just get very painfull hands and nipples great! The pain in my nipples has caused me to faint on occasion. It's worse in pregnancy.

Ds2 and I don't get any swelling though.

This evening it took ages for the colour to return to his foot after I pressed it with my thumb. About 8 seconds. It was purple/red blotchy. When I was in hospital with him for Bronchiolits they said if it takes more than 2 seconds for the colour to come back then that's not a good sign, something to do with his oxygen levels I think. It was coming back quicker a while later.

Maybe i'll take him to see GP too.

princessmel · 31/03/2010 21:10

Not sure if that made sense. I mean, it was purple and blotchy and when I pressed it , it went white and then took ages for the colour to come back.
He was with his friend who is 8 months and his skin was a 'normal' peachy colour next to ds2's technicoloured hands and feet.

Oblomov · 31/03/2010 21:29

Don't bother with the HV. she will only have to refer you to a GP anyway. get an appointment with a different Gp. well done for getting photograph evidence. be strong. don't be fobbed off. ask for a referal and don't leave without one.
be strong. be firm.

princessmel · 01/04/2010 11:32

I just took ds2 (also for a rash and sore eye) and the GP said it was due to him being cold. That's it as far as he was concerned.
I mentioned Raynauds and he said it's very rare in babies. (mummytopebs your situation is much more serious imo, due to the black and swelling) I also said it ran in my family.

He said as he has a viral infection, his body is concentrating on keeping his core warm and the hands and feet are getting less blood.

He did say I could take a picture and bring it in and to go back if I was worried.

So on the basis of this I'd see the GP and take a photo.

mummytopebs · 01/04/2010 12:28

I took photos to so they couldnt really ignore a black hand and arm. I am not convinced dd is raynards as i cant find any mention of black and swelling on net.

DD hands have been blue all morning and have just gone back normal colour but next time they are purple i am going to try the pressing thing and see how long they stay white.

I got told raynards is rare to but that doesnt mean it cant happen. Doctors are so annoying sometimes

princessmel · 01/04/2010 12:31

oh yes the pressing thing...doc said that only is a problem if it's on the body, not the hands and feet. He said they do take longer to go back to skin colour.

Black and swelling would worry me greatly.

mummytopebs · 22/05/2010 22:27

Hi I was just wondering if your ds feet had stopped turning blue so much now the weather has warned up? DD is now 4 months and her left arm and hand and now left foot still keep going a black colour, her body also goes like an ashen colour. This morning it was 24 degrees outside and she had a vest and sleepsuit on and her toe and finger nails were white and if you pressed her feet they didnt change colour as they were so white.

I have been back to the gp armed with my pictures and they have sent her to a larger hospital that is further from our home for a more in depth heart scan
