My DS was diognosed (sp?) with asthma 2 mths ago just after his 5th birthday.

I had taken him to the doctors in early december with a bad cough that would not clear to check it hadn't gone onto his chest. Was told he was a bit weizzie and given a blue inhaler to be given 2 puffs 4 times a day and come back after a mth to have him checked.

Went back and was told to carry on with the inhaler as the cough was still present was also given a brown inhaler to be taken morning and night aswell as blue one and again told to leave it a mth then come back.

Went back cough gone thought great DS won't need the inhalers as i was quite worried about the side afects of them, to be told that DS was being diagnosed (sp?) with asthma and to carry on with inhalers.

So DS is now taking 10 puffs of his different inhalers each day but his breathing seems to be getting worse not better he get out of breath much quicker and sometimes really struggles to catch his breath even just walking across the room.

I took him back to the doctors and was tolg hes got asthma thats normal

So i was wounding if anyone with experince could tell me if it was normal for him to get worse not better???

Thank you

I don't know enough to comment on his treatment, but can I suggest you give these guys a ring: they're very knowledgeable and helpful and might help you ask your GP the right questions.

We used to go to an asthma nurse who was really helpful. Ask your GP/health centre.

The inhalers won't make the symptoms worse. Is it possible that he is reacting to all those pollens that get released at at this time of the year? have you got a new pet?

I don't think that the symptoms are normal, if anything they are normal of an asthma not well controlled. Try to get an appointment with the asthma nurse, she may be a little more knowlodgeable.

Thank you all, i will defently be getting outside advice before visting my doctors again i didn't even think about an asthma nurse.

I didn't think about pollen either, other than that there has been nothing new interduced to and the house has never been cleaner in a bid to get rid of the dust.

Elloise,
If he's really struggling for breath on mild exertion and has not previously had athmatic-type problems, you may want more investigations, if only for peace of mind. If his inhalers aren't helping, it doesn't make sense to keep using them without a proper systemitic analysis of their effect. You could ask for a referral to a respiratory specialist for a definitive asthma diagnosis and if it's not asthma, ask for someone to check other possibilites.
