Has anyone's dc had to have a tooth taken out?

It looks likely that my 6 year old has to have a tooth taken out. He is going to have to be referred to a specialist as he totally freaked out when his dentist mentioned it.

He is absolutely petrified and I'm not sure I'll even be able to get him through the door but the nerve of the tooth is decayed and it is causing him some pain.

What should I expect? Will they put him out under general anaesthetic?

Hi there, I had 4 teeth taken out when I was 7. (20 odd years ago...) I was put to sleep and all I remember is the nice nurse, some blood in my mouth and a big sticker.

Also, my mouth stopped hurting.

Good luck to you! I reckon it may be harder for you than for him

two dcs recently had teeth taken out - ds(6) freaked out at the local dentist so it was off to the dental hospital. ds had gas and air, a bit like you have in labour, so awake throught he process. It fits across the nose only so they are breathing in it whilst their mouth is open. They put a gel on to clean?/ numb the gum then when they did the injection he felt nothing at all. When they removed the teeth, and there was a bit of pulling, he felt nothing either too. Whilst they wait for the teeth to go numb they played games with him and put him at rest. They said he might be woozy for a bit but he was fine immediately after. The 2nd dc did not have gas just the gel, and the injection again it was also painless. The staff at the dental hospital were brilliant with them. I didnt hear any children crying at all on any of our appointments. Just a shame ds cant go there for his annual check ups.

Thanks for the replies. Mumble ds HATES the sight of blood. In fact whenever he falls over and hurts himself he is absolutely fine unless he looks at it and there is blood, then he passes out.

Oh joy. It aint gonna be easy is it!

The only blood he will see will be on the gauze which he will have to bite down on after the extraction. But if you explain to the dentist they can whip it out of site before your ds see it. Neither of mine had any bleeding after.

ds hates blood too & he's had two teeth out. First was a milk tooth. I wasn't there (would have been if I'd known what was to happen), but the local dentist just yanked it out apparently. Not sure if he had a local or nothing - I've a vague feeling it may have been nothing, but certainly nothing strong. Ds wasn't too traumatised I'm told - it was all over very quickly.

The other tooth was a permanent one, for this he went to a specialist dental place and had some drug that really spaced him out, like going on a trip. He had wierd & vivid dreams, and remembered nothing of the actual procedure afterwards, though he wasn't actually unconcious like with a GA. Two adults had to take him, so he had someone sat with him in the car afterwards.
