What is it that you put in the bath to help itchy chickenpox?

Dd1 has chickenpox. She's been fine for 3 days but has just started to scratch (new spots are like little blisters). Is it baking soda you put in the bath to help - if so, how much?

Bicarbonate of soda. Not sure how much tbh,I would try a couple of tablespoons. Or oatmeal in a pair of tights.

I read that porridge oats help (tie them in a muslin or teatowel).

meep · 25/03/2010 16:05

have no oatmeal but do have bicarb -

thank you!

porridge oats or aveeno bath emollient

meep · 25/03/2010 16:23

have aveeno too!

Fingers crossed for an itch free night!

Also I believe it's supposed to be a cool bath. I think hot gets the blood rushing around more so exacerbates the itching... Lukewarm should do it.

I did once read about someone who makes chicken pox bath bombs, will see if I can find the link...

meep · 25/03/2010 16:33

cool bath - noted !

Maybe I can fashion together a bath bomb of aveeno, oats and bicarb....

Anyone know if a 2.11yo can have piriton - it says for 1yo and over but is it not now on the banned list?

Bother - I know I posted the link on Mumsnet but I'm guessing they archive old posts now...

Bicarb or Calamine should help.

NumptyMum · 25/03/2010 16:35

No idea re Piriton, guess you'd have to check with a chemist.

morejuiceplease · 25/03/2010 16:40

When my dds had chicken pox I used pox coin, can get it from boots, it costs about £10. You don't put it in the vath though, it's like a mousse you rub on their skin, and it cools and stop the itchiness. Much easier and less messy than calamine lotion

meep · 25/03/2010 16:54

I have calamine cream which isn't as messy and I just love the smell! If it is worse tomorrow I will make the trip out to Boots.

I was prescribed Piriton for my 21 month old very recently, so I presume it's ok. You could ring a pharmacist to check.

beammeupscotty · 25/03/2010 19:43

You can buy piriton syrup over the counter for over ones for chickenpox itch (also may make them drowsy so sleep better and no scratch!)

3andahalfmonkeys · 25/03/2010 20:02

my now 18 month old has been prescribed piriton since he was 10 months old do would think it should be ok

meep · 25/03/2010 20:14

thanks everyone. She seems fine after her bicarb bath and calamine cream - I can hear her supstairs siging to herself!

When my fiesty dd2 gets it I will be making sure that a 1yo can have piriton - I can't imagine her taking the itch calmly !

Yes piriton still definately available for children over 12 months over the counter, it is only cough/cold/medised stuff that has changed.

soremummy · 25/03/2010 22:06

get the calamine with glycerine in a tube from boots works great and my dd has had piriton since 10mths so thats ok, wishing you luck. i also found oakts in tights in bath was soothing especially for my at the time 30 yr old hubby who passed them on to the kids

meep · 27/03/2010 11:52

soremummy, I have that - it is my saviour!

thankyou moaning.

Dd1 is fine today - lots of little scabs - but she's not allowed back at nursery till Tuesday so we are going to have a nice day out together.
