Neurofen not working for longer than 3 hours

I have a 16 month old daughter who has had one illness after another since August last year - mostly high temperatures with nothing else to show for it. She has had 2 febrile convulsions - one in Nov and one in Feb. She has had a cold in the last week and on Sunday suddenly started having high temperatures again. The GP said yesterday morning that she has nothing wrong in terms of throat, ear or chest and said it was just a virus. There are other theories that all these illnesses are caused by her teeth.

Anyway, the real dilemma this time is that the neurofen is wearing off after about 3 hours and calpol isn't reducing the temperature very quickly, so we are scared that she will have another convulsion. Has anyone had the same experience? If yes - what on earth do we do? At this rate we will run out of calpol and neurofen options.

Help please - am at my wits end!!! [sad}

How often can you give the Neuforen? is it every 4 hours?

Dd2 suffers with high temps and often ends up in hospital as she can't control her temp and refuses to drink.

I think all you can do is try and keep her cool (thin clothing or just a nappy, keep the room cool but not cold, give her cool water etc..) but i assume you are already doing these. Its very worrying when they are like this and it always makes me very anxious (which is why we end up at the hospital with her).

Dd2 has had it on and of since september (this year has been i night-mare for bugs) and we have spent a lot of time at the GP's only to be told 'its a virus, give calpol'. If you are worried i would phone the GP or NHS direct for advice.

I am no expert on this but I think there is a school of thought that the convulsions will happen regardless of bringing the temp down. From my experience (and I know it is not everyone's cup of tea) the homeopathic remedy Belladonna is good for reducing temps. I give 1 every 15 mins until temp reduced. Certainly ring the GP if worried though, you know your child best.

I've just spoken to a GP friend of mine and she has said that the reason the neurofen isn't working as well is because the body is overriding it as there is something wrong - whether it is a virus or something else. So I think it is just back to keeping her cool - she has just been in her nappy today.

Reikizen - am really interested in giving her belladonna and last time she was ill I consulted a homeopath friend who suggested 200c potency and one pill 3 times a day. Am just a bit scared to try it in case it does something else to her!!!

Thanks everyone for your advice though - these children are definitely sent to give us heart attacks!!
