DS who is 11 months has had a high temp since monday afternoon.
I've taken him to the doctors twice since then and he said viral thing but he also said he had a red ear and throat.
I just took his temp an hour ago and it was 40.2, higher than it has been.
I've been alternating calpol and ibuprofen, just woke him for some more calpol just now.
Shall I wake him and take him up to the out of hours doctors now?
Or wait and see?

I would ring for an appointment now and then take him when he wakes up. Hope it isn't anything serious.

belgo · 17/03/2010 06:42

Is he showing any other symptoms- rash, painful neck (difficulty moving head).

Is he rousable as normal?

FrameyMcFrame · 17/03/2010 06:42

thanks Fab, I'm so worried but DP thinks I'm overreacting.
I'm going to wake him at 7 whatever anyway, I'll ring now and get him an appointment

he's been asleep since 8.30 last night but I have woken him to give him calpol and ibuprofen over night and he's had some milk from a bottle.
He was sick twice yesterday after having food but keeping milk and water down ok.
thanks belgo

Dad's often do think us mums over react so don't take too much notice. You are worried and that temperature is high.

FrameyMcFrame · 17/03/2010 06:52

it's come down to 38.4
Thank goodness.

Should I wait til he wakes up on his own? He probably needs the sleep if he is ill.

If it's down, I'd let him sleep but monitor the temp as you go. My 15 month old had a virus a couple of weeks ago, and at its worst she was sleeping about 18 hours a day. Terrified me, but it was what she needed.

Good luck.

BlauerEngel · 17/03/2010 06:57

You could try doing a leg wrap to get his temperature down a bit - it's surprisingly effective. Get two small handtowels and douse them in lukewarmwarm/cool (but not cold) water, then wrap them round ds's lower legs. Rinse out and repeat every half hour or so.

But I would go to the doctor at that temp as well. Anything under 40 degrees I can cope with - anything over needs a medical check, especially since this is the temp WITH calpol. At least he's keeping water down. Best of luck.

chimchar · 17/03/2010 06:57

thats good framey.

i'd let him sleep all he likes today, just so long as you keep prodding him every so often to make sure he gets uncomfy and starts waking up...you can leave him again then.

my ds had tonsilitus when he was about your ds age...i've never seen him so poorly.

it might be worth getting an appt later if you can, although most infections clear up without antibiotics...

i'm no doctor though. go with your motherly instinct, its rarely wrong.

BlauerEngel · 17/03/2010 06:58

OK, just seen your previous post. 38.4 is no problem - let him sleep it out. But try the leg wrap as well - it's far better on their systems than extra medication.

FrameyMcFrame · 17/03/2010 07:04

thanks so much everybody, I will let him sleep for now.
Might try the leg wrap if he goes up again later.
I'll ring for a normal GP appointment when it opens at 8.
Thanks again for the reassuring advice, I'll post back later.

He woke up and was in fairly good spirits, his temp is now 37.6 so panic over, though it may go up again later.
Thanks again for the hand holding

Keep an eye on him. My LO had a temp that kept going up and down, accompanied with cold like symptoms.

One morning the temp was 39.6 and like your DH, mine told me I was over-reacting to take my DD to the out of hours surgery.

Turns out that she had a nasty ear infection that took two weeks to clear up with two different strength ABs, but even after just a couple of days she was so much better.

If your LO is still out of sorts, get them to investigate that red ear again...
