I've posted about ds skin before but think he has a different problem now as the skin on his legs and arms is so dry that it is starting to crack. I haven't used any steroid cream on it but have beenslathering on the oilatum three times a day to no effect. Have GP appt tomorrow to discuss but would love to have some advice from here as GP is pretty old school when it comes to this sort of thing.

Have you tried Aveeno. It has been fabulous for DD's skin and you can get it on prescription. It is oatmeal based and you can get cream and bath oil.

I second Aveeno, it's been amazing for my ds2 who had really bad skin and it cleared it up wonderfully.

Ekka · 16/03/2010 20:33

Haven't seen any of your earlier posts, but we have used Epaderm emollient at every nappy change (so probably about 6-8 times a day) and 1% hydrocortisone cream morning and night to bring ds' eczema under control.

We also used these all the time at first and then reducing to overnight use only as his skin improved. They are available on prescription.

Does your ds have any allergies? We were referred to a paediatrician and ds ended up being diagnosed with allergies to cows milk, eggs and soya. Cutting them out of my diet (he was only 5mo at the time) and not giving them to him made a huge difference as well.

Ds' skin was cracked, weepy and bleeding and now is back to almost like 'normal' skin.

Hope your ds' skin improves quickly....

thank you for your replies. I've seen aveeno but not tried it and not heard of epaderm. Had not even thought about allergies!

Swapping to goats milk/ cheese etc also really helped DD. Didn't have any tests done, but I thought it was worth a try.

Agree with the posts about aveeno - I use the cream on my DD about 5 times a day plus an Aveeno powder in the bath which really seems to help.

Also use the dermasilk suits that Ekka recommends and also some clinifast suits after covering her in Diprobase ointment.

The dermasilk and clinifast suits were the thing that really changed her skin from being absolutely horrendous to almost being normal again!

I've been using Miamoo which is a natural baby skincare range and found it amazing. I was using Oilatum and doublebase prescribed by the doc which seemed to flare up my DS's ezcema and maade it so much worse!

A little baba oil in the bath and huggy lotion afterwards has worked wonders! I'm also so aware of the 'chemical loaded' products in the supermarket so much more and am checking the labels to avoid parabens and chemicals which damage their skin.

Gah! I'm so pathetic, got fobbed off with some Diprobase and a patronizing talk about how he doesn't know how children of his generation survived without exclusion diets and creams to protect their skin.

The Diprobase smells horrible but skin seems a bit softer today.
Jennifer, I totally agree with you and try to avoid parabens wherever possible but they seem rife in children's skin products (the ones on prescription). Will check out the ones you mentioned.

You're not pathetic, they are just very reluctant to prescribe Aveeno, I presume it has something to do with cost .

I had bought some myself and tried it, so I could tell my GP that it worked. If what you've been given doesn't work, you could try this. I believe it is a third off in Sainsbury's at the moment .

ceb80 · 18/03/2010 20:54

I didn't even get a chance to mention Aveeno! Will add some onto my next online order and give it a whirl.

Epaderm gets my vote! My bubba had eczema from about 3 months. We were prescribed lots of different lotions including Diprobase which apparently can sting! Epaderm is expensive £15/tub, and doctors are reluctant to prescribe it - but they will if you request it. After trying different treatments Epaderm cleared it up after 6 weeks

Aveeno was the ONLY thing that worked on my dd's eczema. She did outgrow it at about 3.
