He was sick at 10pm last night quite a few times til 11pm. He slept with me and wasn't sick again til this morning. He had his milk, was ok until the second i sat him up then me, him and the sofa were wearing said milk .

I haven't given him any more milk yet but he's had water, a few rice cakes, some banana and some bread which has all stayed down. Should i try him with milk again or keep him off it for today and see how he is tomorrow. If not milk what else can i give him?

If he's not giving you the impression he's hungry for milk I'd stick to the dry stuff for a day or so and try to get as much water or really diluted apple juice in him as possible. If you are worried he's dehydrated maybe try some milk then. I don't want to drink milk if I feel sick so have never pushed it with my kids if they do!

Poor thing, its horrible when they are poorly.

The milk has been the prob this wk with my DD & D&V, water and dry things for a day or so and then slowly reintroducing milk has worked.

Don't give him anything to eat. Give him water to drink. Give his poor little tummy a rest for, say, 6 hours. If I were you I'd leave it til about 5pm this evening but I'm a bit hard like that. Then try him with banana or plain stewed apple. Think about how you feel when you've been sick - you really don't want to eat for ages afterwards, do you?

I've got the same problem. Well, he's got V but no D, so far.

He did a huge projectile vomit on Wednesday evening, so yesterday I didn't give him anything to eat until lunchtime, when he had porridge and banana. He seemed fine, if grouchy, so I gave him more food at dinnertime, plus his milk. But last night he was sick three times between 10 and midnight. So, today I'm trying to only give him dioralyte until the evening.

He seems so distressed, though, and I can't tell if it's because he feels ill, or is hungry, and if so whether it's for milk or food.

Do you think some breastmilk this pm would be OK?

Thanks for the replies even though i only read them this morning so did actually give him his milk last night as he hadn't been sick for over 12 hours. He had the full 8oz and kept it down. I also gave him a bottle this morning which also stayed down but i haven't given him any milk since reading this, just water and apple so far. His diarrhea got worse overnight so i will take the advice on here and leave him off his milk a bit to let his belly recover.

Herb, i've never held back on giving breast milk unless they are really badly sick. Both mine have wanted more bm but little food when ill, i think its a comfort thing and it keeps their fluids up. I've always stopped cows milk and food made w it thou.

Pheonix, ds2 had similar experience recently. Was sick 4 times over 2 days then had diarrhoea for 5 days. Didn't seem to bother him but took a while to clear his system. As long as he's drinking just be patient and give him lots of cuddles!

ShowOfHands · 12/03/2010 16:42

Breastmilk is absolutely fine and the best thing really for a d&v bug as it's quickly digested and even when the vomitting/diarrhoea is still happening, some is kept down.

There is evidence to suggest nowadays, in fact they recommend, that you don't limit food or deny it with a d&v bug, but offer whatever they fancy. The exception to the rule is dairy which irritates upset stomachs and why milk is often the first thing to set off the vomitting again.

Whatever route you take, fluids are the most important thing and don't be surprised if the bug causes a temporary intolerance to dairy, it's normal.

I just don't know what to do. NHS direct said to give dioralyte for about 12 hours, then a bit of milk (formula or breast), then plain food 24 hours after last vomit. DS had boob at 1pm, 4oz formula at 4pm, and flushed with success I gave him some porridge, made with water, and a banana at 5.30. He threw it all up again. So it seems it was the food, not the milk, that set him off.

He's got a rash as well.

I hate this. I guess I've just got to get used to him being ill (he's my first), but I worry that it's something more serious - stomach blockage or something - in a PFB manner.

bibbitybobbityhat · 12/03/2010 23:19

herby - please please please don't worry. If it was something more serious he would be screaming in agony or boiling hot or all floppy. He's got a tummy bug and you need to brace yourself for dealing with this about twice a year for the next five years and then once a year after that until he gets to his teens, on average .

When reintroducing milk you can water it down so its not as rich.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 12/03/2010 23:28

The recomendation I have heard is BRAT

Banana
Rice
Apple
Toast

and breast milk is fine too

ShowOfHands · 13/03/2010 13:00

Breastmilk, honestly is the best thing if he can keep it down. Formula is cow's milk so is likely to irritate a poorly stomach.

Many people do stick to the BRAT diet, it used to be the way to eat after d&v, but there's no reason to limit food if he wants it. Personally, I never want food after a d&v bug so perhaps just bmilk and dioralyte for a time will be the kindest thing.

It is horrid and anxious making. I only have the 1 too and am a wreck when she's ill.
