Oh god am in a bit of a panic, she must have bum shuffled her way to my chest of drawers and pulled them down. They were switched off but I'd just been using them. I was just ironing ds top for school in the other room!!! It's a small line blister, you know the sort when you burn yourself with iron. Applied cold flannel and it's just a small blister now. God I feel like the worlds crappest mum!!!

It sounds like nothing awful has been done, but let it be a lesson to you. You don't want it to be a kettle full of boiling water next time... Unplug all your electrical goods and put the wire/plug out of reach so that she cannot do this.

Lots of cold water on it and phone NHS Direct for advice ASAP. Phone them now.

There's a big campaign in Glasgow at the moment, reminding people to keep straightener's out of childrens' reach. I think it's becoming increasingly common.

Thanks for replies, I took her to our local walk in centre and they were excellent and dressed it for me, I need to take her back on sat for it to be re-dressed. Lesson well learnt, it just was not even on my radar (stupidly) that she would get to them (she only bum shuffles a few feet) and mornings are manic in my house for school run! Smallorange, they did say they see lots of burns on children from hair straightners!

These things happen. They are a nightmare at that age! I'm dreading DD3 starting to crawl !

Shame, poor wee mite - accidents happen, my DD (4) decided to put her hand on the bulb in my bedside lamp which i have on the floor - she screamed blue murder and i kind of just muttered that maybe DP should put a flannel on it - poor little thing kept crying, i was what a fuss - until i looked at her little hand and saw it blistering - i was devestated and took her straight to minor injuries - they bandaged and cleaned for us and gave us some bandages to redo - i was mortified, it just didnt occur to me that she could get such a bad burn from the lightbulb - lesson well learnt.

Thank you, I know these things happen but it's still my fault, like I said I just turned them off and put them on chest of drawers without seeing the danger, she was only few feet away. So need to baby proof upstairs now and get dp to lower her cot so I can use as a playpen in the mornings so she is out of harms way. X

Glad she's ok and you really shouldn't blame yourself. There are lots of thigs like this in the home which if we were perfect we'd realise could be a risk - but we don't and most of the time we get away with it.

Hair straighteners are lethal- PLEASE never ever leave them like that again. I know you have learnt your lesson but there was that little girl that did the same as your dd except she caught them in herhands and grabbed them and her hands were so badly burned...

Most straighteners now come with a heat proof pounch that you are meant to put them in immediately after using them.

My children are old enough not to be penned in anywhere and we live in a bungalow so no stair gated. I am pretty relaxed about most things but paranoid about straighteners- they are just the kind of thing a 3yo girl would try to use after she had seen mummy doing it...could be horrendous...so I'm very careful
