Being sick with chesty cough thing

DD (10 months, 7 months corrected age due to prematurity) has just come out of hospital after 3 days on oxygen due to a bronchiolitis/chesty thing. They obviously feel she is better or they wouldn't have discharged her (and I agree, she is much better), but today she has had 2 pretty large vomits - one after her morning nap which brought up her porridge, and one after her afternoon nap which brought up her lunch.

Ok, make that 3 vomits - she's just brought up her dinner halfway through eating it.

Each time it is preceded by a cough (not necessarily a major cough, but a cough all the same). So, what do I do? Given her prematurity I tend to be a little PFB with her, and also given the fact that in the last 3 weeks she's had 2 separate 3-night stays in hospital with chesty coughs and chicken pox in the weeks in between!

I think I'll call NHS Direct, but if your little ones have had coughs which made them sick, what have you done to help them, and how long have they lasted?

Thanks!

Is the cot raised at the head end? That might help some. And get a humidifier to help her not to cough.
My DD had a terrible cough from 7 months to 12 months and they gave her an inhaler just to calm down her chest. They thought it could be an astmatic cough but would't actually mean she would always have it. This did help but even with the paeds mask, it was really hard to get her to breathe in the meds properly. Eventually as she matured, she grew out of it. She was sick a lot though and it didn't seem to take much coughing for her to throw back up the whole meal from earlier on - especially (weirdly) if it contained pasta!
With your DD though, she has more complications having been premature and with her stays in hospital so I would get her checked out again like you said.

is the cough making her sick or is she vomiting without coughing. i think you would be wise to phone nhs direct as i had a cough and vomiting together and it turned out to be pneumonia. dont want to scare you just giving you some facts. hope everything is ok am sure it will be

Well, they told me to keep an eye on her, feed her little and often and phone back if any of her symptoms change.

To be honest I think it's purely all the gunk in her chest is on the move now and is making her sick. I'm just so tired of her being poorly!!

Thanks for the help and the kind words.

When DS and DD have gunk on their chest, they're are always sick at some point - they swallow so much off their chests, rather than it being blown out of the nose. You can tell that's what they've done cause the sick is slimey (sorry tmi) But ATL is right when she says watch out for pneumonia.

ds2 does this too when he gets a bad cough. after he's done it once it's as if his stomach muscles are too weak and he'll gag and/or puke at the drop of a hat for a couple of days. similarly if his tummy gets too full whilst he has the cough or cold he's sick.

i think some children have stronger stomachs than others. ds1 never ever gets sick with a cough or cold.

sigh Her temp came up overnight, phoned NHSdirect again who told me to give calpol and monitor her - and phone back if her syptoms changed!

We kept it down overnight and then today it's been up and down a bit - using calpol and nurofen alternately to keep it down. Took her to the doctor this afternoon who said to carry on as we were and come back in the morning. He said her lungs were ok - a bit crackly, but nothing sinister.

I'm just struggling to cope with the tiredness right now. I could cry.

We had same situation recently - pneumonia, 11 day stay in hosptial with DD (12 months). If you see her resps (breaths) are over 50 times a minute you need to get baby to hospital for oxygen, esp. given the recent history...
Good luck, I hope your baby gets better soon.
