When to go to doctors ...

My lo (14 months) and I have had a real stinker of a cold for 3 weeks now. It is the kind with lots of catarrh especially at morning and night although our noses are streaming - or requiring blowing - constantly all day.

My lo is waking at night because he can't breath (bunged up nose rather than anything more sinister). I have been using karvol and saline drops but we are still up twice a night getting him back to sleep. On top of it all, I am exhausted!

Is there any point in going to the doctors or will they just say it's a cold and I have to wait it out? I'm not sure how much longer I can cope. I should add, my lo is full o beans during the day (with longer naps)

Thanks in advance

Go to the doctors anyway, they may be able to give your lo something more effective for the catarrh.

Sometimes they do seem to have a never ending cold at that age, but if your struggling then they may be able to help.

Just about to post my own thread about when to go to the docs as well, you have my sympathies!

Thanks lilacclaire.

I have made an appt for us both. I never go myself so even of there is nothing they can do, at least I have been paying all these years for it!

Thing is, he is fine during the day but is bad during the night. I can cope for a week but 3 weeks ... I am fairly sure it's the same bug as we have hardly been out to get anything else and I have had it too!

Good luck with your dilemma!

If it's been going on for 3 weeks then I'd go (and I am a hooooooge not-going-to-doc type ) Might be a secondary chest infection and antibiotics might be needed.

Thanks Bucharest. I get chest infections every year so i know mine isn't - yet - and I donlt think my lo's is but ...

Thanks, I hate going to the doctors and just needed the reassurance that I am not wasting everyone's time!

I find that when my ds got this whole snotty cold thing, the only ay I could really get rid of the snot was by cutting out the dairy in his diet. Not always easy, but I gave hinm rice dream or oatley instead of milk, and cut out cheese, yoghurts etc. It did really help. Might be worth a try......

Thanks Orangina - you know I was thinking the same (but haven't done anything about it!)

I know they recommend cutting down dairy to reduced catarrh in adults so I guess it would be the same for babies. It goes a bit against the grain though, doesn't it but I guess for a short time it wouldn't hurt?
