He's had a temp up and down around 38.5 last few days, but now it has shot up to 39.5. Have given him calpol and nurofen, but am a leetle bit worried now.

you need to give it a chance to work. did you give paracetamol and ibuprofen together?

sausagepastie · 09/03/2010 19:03

Has he been seen yet - might be ear or throat infection etc.
Can you ring the out of hours?

winnybella · 09/03/2010 19:04

Temp in itself is not worrying unless accompanied by other symptoms.
How old is he? When did you give him last dose?
If he was stable temperature wise and now it's up...hmmm...I think I would call a doctor.
no reason to panic yet, though!

winnybella · 09/03/2010 19:05

Aaah, 20 minutes is not enough. Take his temp in 30 minutes and if it's not down then call a doctor.

moodlum · 09/03/2010 19:06

I gave them both together - normally I'd wait and stagger them, but I decided to just throw drugs at it.

We have an appointment tomorrow at the GP in the morning. And I've rung my lovely neighbour who's a paediatric sister and she's offered to come and have a look if it doesn't come down.

Poor little ds.

Also, temperature tends to rise in the evenings.

notnowbernard · 09/03/2010 19:06

DD1 had a 40.2 a few weeks back - tonsilitis

She was fine, Calpol and Ibuprofen combined brought it down

Try not to panic, if the meds don't bring it down, call out of hrs GP. HAs he been seen already?

moodlum · 09/03/2010 19:06

Thanks all. Love MN when there's a panic.

MY DS had this for several days at age 4 - it turned out to be an ear infection which only showed itself on day 6. Go to the GP tomorrow and see if there's anything obvious - go with your gut.

moodlum · 09/03/2010 19:08

40.2 NNB? I'll go and take his temp in a minute.

If he doesn't seem very unwell ie listless, stiff neck etc, then I wouldn't worry as you have an appointment at the GP tomorrow.

notnowbernard · 09/03/2010 19:10

Yes, 40.2. Scary, eh?

She tends to run high temps though. I can recall a few 40's as a result of tonsilitis, ear infections and the dreaded Swine

BariatricObama · 09/03/2010 19:12

poor wee mite. have you tried cooling down his face with a face cloth? i had a temp of 40 last night and it was miserable

winnybella · 09/03/2010 19:12

Kids can run very high temps- up til around 40 is ok, more than that warrants trip to A&E.

moodlum · 09/03/2010 19:13

Am going to take his temp now.

DD had high temps in last couple of weeks, in 38/39 region, reaching 39.8. She was also coughing. Turned out to be tonsillitus. GP gave abs and she was fine again within a couple of days.

moodlum · 09/03/2010 19:24

Phew. back down to a less panic inducing 38.6.

thanks ladies.
