My son is booked to have surgery on his Sliding hiatus hernia as he is sick most days and everytime he has a cold or is unwell he is sick every meal for about 5 days. Has anyone else had a child this young have the surgery ? The thing that worries me is the surgeon said "he will NEVER be able to sick again" (which includes bugs & hangovers!). I need to ask some more questions I think.

Not this type of hernia I don't think, but DS1 had a double hernia operation at 3 months old, they were getting bigger and bigger and really bulging, so he was done quickly, they never mentioned anything about the sick thing? And he can be sick now.

DS1 is now 7 and you can't see any scaring at all, he was fine on the day itself, the no milk thing really worried me as he was a big baby, but he managed on water sips before the operation, sone at 9am after getting to the hospital at 7am, Chelsea and Westminster London. Handing him over was the worst part, you will probably be able to stay while they put him under as he is older. DH had to do it and I was so worried the whole time, the second they said it had all gone well and I could go and get him was brilliant. He gulped down some milk and looked happy!

We just had to wait for him to wee then we went home. They put glue instead of stitches and covered both wounds with a massive peice of clear plastic that was like a second skin. It did not bother him at all!

The staff we just fantastic, really caring and understanding of that fact you are wobbly and worried, lots of TLC and tissues.

Write your questions down, can you email/send a letter, when is your next appt? Do you have one before the surgery? The more you know the better prepared you will feel to deal with the day.

Good luck, it will be fine. x

Thanks for the reply.

His hernia is where his stomach pushes through the diaphragm opening into his chest. He is sick all the time (spent 10 minutes clearing it up this evening). The surgery basically sews up the hole so that nothing will ever be able to come up which will obviously stop the sick and the acid. The thing is NEVER being able to be sick again just doesn't seem quite right - apparently tummy bugs and even hangovers in later life will all come out of the other end. Can't quite get my head round it.
