Really worried about dd - anyone had similar?

Have posted a couple of times lately about my dd's health. She had croup about seven weeks ago and been up and down since; temperature last couple of weeks which comes and goes, a cough a couple of weeks ago, some tummy ache and very very tired. But my biggest concern was the fact that her glands have been up for all this time, not just in her neck but also along her shoulder. We have been to the Drs a few times, with the same response; her chest is clear its just a virus and last week probably a urine infection, it wasn't (which I knew!). Anyway went back this morning because still worried about glands and dr gave her a more thorough check and said she has got little glands up all over her body, he went on to say he was more re-assured than worried and didn't think there was a serious underlying cause like leukemia as he would have thought there would have been more symptoms, but to bring her back in two weeks and if there is no change they will do some blood tests.

Now I am absolutely terrified it is going to be something awful (even though I know he was trying to re-assure me) and wondered if anyone has had dcs with anything similar.

It's so very worrying, I know how you feel. When my ds had chick pox last year his glands came up everywhere but quite big. Gp tried to reassure me too but also gave the come back in 2 weeks if they not gone down and we will investigate further. after one week I was still worried so saw another gp who said it can take weeks to go down after illness and not to worry. My ds' did go down but too about 6 weeks. If it was nasty there would be lots of other symptoms I think and if gp worried he would have ordered tests there and then. Try not to worry oh and don't touch the glands the dr told me, can take longer to go down. Also read on net not to look for glands as you can ALWAYS find them on children. Its been a tough winter and my two have had no end of bugs. Try not to worry xx

Thanks CharlieBoo, your post has helped me feel a bit better. Although I still didn't sleep last night! Am trying to focus on the positive, like you say, I am sure there would be more symptoms.

Have decided to speak to Dr tomorrow when he is back in and ask if we can get a blood test done sooner, so atleast then we can rule out anything and I can stop worrying so much. I just don't think I can last two weeks!

Hi, I know how you feel and the worry is awful. Maybe see a diff GP and see what they say. There are lots of archived posts on here about lymph nodes/glands and children who have been referred by GPs to paediatricians and the paeds are not worried. I think your dd would be really poorly and showing some other signs of being unwell. I agree with going back, you need to be reassured somemore and get some sleep. I was 7 months pg when my ds was like it and I worried myself sick. I booked an appointment at drs for ds and said look I am worried to death he has something awful, please help and they examined him thoroughly and reassured me. Let me know how it goes hun, am sure all is fine xxxxx

Thanks CharlieBoo, you have really helped. I feel a bit better tonight as dd seems a bit more perky, she ate all her tea at nursery (maybe she just doesn't like my cooking!). And despite no nap she didn't seem overtired, so fingers crossed it is just a lingering virus and shes on the mend. I will let you know how I get on at the Drs.

Glands can take ages to go down, so even if they will not diminish in size in two weeks' time, don't panic.
On the other hand, it's a good idea for dd to have a blood test just to rule anything serious out- very unlikely, but it's a simple test and then you will be reassured next time she catches a bug it's just that.
I remember ds having one horrid year at 1 or 2 when there was no end to ear infections, fevers, conjuctivitis etc.
Also, he had one huge tonsil at 4, it was not going down, doctor in a renowned hospital said they have to take them out as the fact it's only one is a cause for concern...only to find out the other was as big as the first one, but was more hidden, so they couldn't see it before the op.
Are the glands v. assymetrical? Ie does she have a golf ball on one side of the neck etc?

Hey chick., did you go back to GP today? Hope you got some sleep, x

stepfordmum · 10/03/2010 20:21

Thank you Herecomesthesciencebit, your post made me feel a bit less worried.

Thanks for your post winnybella glands are only up on one side but they are pretty small.

Hi CharlieBoo, yes spoke to the GP today in a telephone consultation and he agreed to the blood test, so we have an appointment at the local children's hospital tomorrow morning for the test, am really relieved that he agreed.

I feel quite confident now that dd doesn't have anything serious wrong with her, as she is still quite perky, eating a good amount today and being quite energetic but I still want the test to put my mind at rest totally as glands are still up. Still not sure if I'll be able to sleep tonight though!
