i can only get a small ammount of liquids into her, she wont take the dioralytes at all, she doesnt like the taste, she wont eat anything at all! she is drinking her formula but wont touch solid foods.... plus everytime she lets of 'gas' theres yellow poo in her nappie... she has explosive diarrhea, im changing her nappie at least 12times a day.. plus shes vomiting all the time as well, her fontanelle is really sunken which shows she is dehydratred.. i feel so bad but i dont know what to do she is like this six days now, i also have the virus but not so much vomiting and more the diarrhea part.. how long is this going to last? and does anyone have any ideas in what i should do for my daughter.. thank you x oh i had her in A+E on thursday for half the night, they put her on a drip as everything she drank she violently vomited back up..

My dd had a gastro bug at 10 months old and it lasted for around 10 days.

Hydration is the most important thing. Unfortunately, dairy is the absolute worst thing for a gut stripped by a gastro bug. It irritates the stomach lining and causes more vomitting. You can also find that a child can develop a temporary lactose intolerance after having a gastro bug. This means that the formula you are giving is disagreeing with her.

Have you tried lots of different types of liquid? Ice lollies? Can you get her to take liquid from a spoon? Or squirt it in with a medicine syringe? Little and often is the way. Too much too soon and it comes straight back up.

DD was bfed when she had the gastro bug and I had to keep latching her off after a couple of mouthfuls as anymore and she would bring it immediately back up again.

It's horrid when they're so poorly and you feel useless. If you are worried about dehydration don't hesitate to take her back to a GP or A&E today. If you can rehydrate her then that's half the battle won and her tummy just needs time to recover. There's no reason not to continue to offer foods just in case you can get her to take some. Anything she fancies (except dairy as I said) to try and tempt her. They used to give a bland diet with gastro bugs but now say not to bother and to offer food as usual.

How awful for both of you.

ten days?? oh god.... that must have been awful the thing is she is hungry, she cries for a bottle of formula, but she wont touch solids... i offered her some of her favourite plain biscuits earlier and she threw it on the floor. in the two days she has only got sick a handful of times but thats because i havnt been forcing liquids or foods on her, she just wants to lie down and sleep all the time the poor thing, her rib are pokin out of her back, i might bring her back the A+E tomorrow if shes not any better, the thing is i cant really be leaving the house for fear of diarrhea myself

If you think she is dehydrated take her back to A+E, my DD was kept in and put on a drip until she was able to take solids again when she was young. She might need a stool sample taken to see which bug she has. Don't be afaraid to be pushy if you are worried, trust your instincts. Good luck.

With dd the vomitting only lasted for the first 3/4 days and then it was just diarrhoea, but pretty foul, 8+ times a day and she took no solids at all in the whole 10 days. But -and importantly- she was bfed. She was at no point dehydrated so I was happy just riding it out. We were on holiday at Center Parcs at the time and we stayed in the villa for the entire time. DH was in his first week in a new job and was driving to work each day and leaving us there with the same bug (stopping the car to vomit), all of his colleagues had it too, my parents were on holiday with us too and they both had it. My parents lost a stone and a half between them. DH lost half a stone. DD lost not an ounce. And she coped with it far better than the rest of them. I didn't get it at all which surprised me.

My main concern was always that she was hydrated. If she had shown signs of dehydration I would have been at the doctors immediately. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to go back if you think she needs a little help.

What are the signs of dehydration? DS has been vomiting, had diarrhea and has eaten practically nothing today - not nearly as badly as described above, but he's not well.

How would I know if he was dehydrated? (He's 14 months and BF).
