Have been told my dd has loose ligaments. She's sitting and rolling but not crawling yet. Had muscle enzyme test today to rule out anything else. Anyone have experience of this? Bit at a loss as to what to do. Have been told that physio will call at some point but could do with pointers and other's stories before then.

bump!

Sorry no experience in children, just in myself - caused my painful SPD. People are constantly saying how flexible my one year old seems which has been worrying me, don't want her to have the same problems I did.

Good luck

Thanks - I'm completely in the dark as I'd never heard anything about the condition before.

I also know nothing about SPD - will it get better?

check out

Symphsis Pubis Dysfunction is where the ligaments ovrstretch in pregnancy due to an overproduction of the hormone relaxin, or it's addition to already loose ligaments. It can cause the pelvis to loosen and also the sacro-illiac joints in the back. Basically my hip usd to move back and forth in pregnancy, and afterwards those ligaments were a bit like overstretched elastic bands.

Now I've lost some weight and got fit again, I'm loads better, I just get some pain around my period or sometimes I get very tight and sometimes sore buttock muscles (!) on one side where the muscles have to overcompensate for the weak joint.

Impossible to know how much (if any) trouble this will cause your dd.

We have it in our family: my Mum is basically not very strong in any of her joints but is for instance a good pianist (bendy joints really good there); I have had a fair bit of trouble with my wrist joints but am otherwise fine (have even done manual labour for a living); none of my brothers are affected; both my dcs, sadly, are hypermobile to the point of disability and have regular episodes of chronic pain. Ds at 9 struggles to use cutlery or to tie his shoe laces, he has episodes where he cannot walk and even when he cannot sit upright due to hip pain. But that is at the severe end of the spectrum.

Physio will want to look at strengthening exercises, possibly also at supportive boots to aid walking and later maybe insoles. Typical problems that can occur are ankle pains in early childhood, followed by knee, hip and lower back pains in adolescence. But most people are absolutely fine.

Thanks Cory - your experience was really helpful. My cousin has fibromyalgia and I'm now wondering whether it may be a family thing to. I have incredibly weak ankles but always put it down to bad luck. I'm sorry to hear your dcs have so much pain - that must be very difficult for you to watch. Really hope your things improve for them both.

Lotster that sounds so painful - I hope it gets better for you.
