7 month old with diarrhoea & vomiting - take to A+E or wait to make doctor appt. in the morning?

7 month old DS hasn't been well all day. His behaviour has been just as contented and interactive - i.e hasn't looked 'under the weather' - but he threw up a large amount of his first milk feed. Then he soaked through his nappy with liquid poo - completely explosive. He continued to have a tiny little bit of diarrhoea here and there throughout the morning; lots of nappy changes!

I gave him plain yoghurt with a little fruit puree for breakfast and he kept that down. Another two milk feeds stayed down. We went into town and no problems - I thought he was feeling better.

He filled another nappy but not as liquid-y as earlier. Standard explosive poo...thought he was probably okay but would take him to the doctor in the morning (you have to book at 8am on the day).

I gave him an Ella's Kitchen banana yoghurt with brown rice for lunch, thinking it would be more gentle on his stomach. Later, he threw it all up.

I've tried to offer him boiled, cooled water continually but he only had a small amount, thinking it would be milk - once he realised it wasn't, not interested.

I had to meet a friend for an hour at 6pm so DP gave him his last milk feed. He called me up panicking because DS had thrown it all up and was distressed. I come home and DS is asleep in bed.

Do you think he'll be okay if I wait to make a doctor's appointment in the morning or could this be a Very Serious Thing (dehydration?) and I need to wake him up and take him to A+E. I'm an inexperienced first-time mother so not sure if I'm being blase or alarmist?

no need for a&e, imo
just keep giving him plenty of fluids and let him rest.

Ok no milk, no solids try some VERY watered down lemonade (I know I know but it always worked with mine) or diahrylite (sp) in tuiny sippy amounts, not a huge bottle full

No to A and E or doctors unless it goes on for days

D and V only a real problem with tiny babies

Thanks. Just worried because he has hardly had any water. He has only kept down breakfast and two milk feeds.

I guess I'll wait to see if he wakes and how he is.

Little sips (not milk though unless it's bmilk, assuming formula?), dioralyte is good for rehydration or you could make your own rehydration drink with water, salt and sugar (google for correct amounts).

It is horrid when they're poorly but keep an eye for signs of dehydration and otherwise lots of fluids and cuddles.

relief

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll just offer lots of water tomorrow and keep an eye on him.

As an aside, what type of foods are most gentle for a baby's sensitive gut? I may have been completely wrong with the fruit and yoghurt and he should have had some of my homemade chicken stew.

It is formula so I'll look up a rehdration drink/Dioralyte. Thanks. I'll Google some dehydration signs too.

This is his first illness so I've got myself worked up!

DD's first illness was a gastro bug. She was 10 months. It was flipping awful seeing her poorly though like your ds she was interactive and content at times.

Dairy is the main thing to avoid as it can irritate a stomach that's already poorly so no formula straight away. Don't be surprised when you re-introduce it if he has more horrid nappies than before. Gastro bugs can cause a temporary lactose intolerance. They used to recommend a white food diet named BRAT (banana, rice, applesauce, toast) as it was bland and easily tolerated but the general thinking nowadays is that they can have whatever they fancy within reason and if they want it then go with it.

Ice lollies are good for rehydration too.

Just plenty of water and cuddles and he'll bounce right back.
