Two year old sore tongue and temp?

spikemomma · 02/03/2010 18:22

My dd has had a temp for a couple of days and been a bit off, but not too much. She's had a rubbish nights sleep last night.

Today she's complaining that her tongue hurts. I've looked at it and the only thing i can see is a few very slightly raised lumps. Very slightly whiteish but not really.

Has anyone any knowledge on what it might be?

i know that thrush looks white on the tongue but not sure if it is more spotty or an all over thing, also not sure if it is usually joined with a temp!

It could be the beginning of hands foot and mouth, which is where blisters form and the pop, and can be painful, i think a temp does go with that.

How high is the temp?

spikemomma · 02/03/2010 18:29

Her temp has been about 38 ish, which seems to have gone in the last day or so.

She has a slight runny nose too, that's why i thought it was just a cold virus thing.

The only tongue kind of thing i can think of is thrush, but i don't think it can be.

Her tongue has about four small different shaped bumps on, could almost think it was the remnant of some food if you didn't look closely.

Thanks for responding so quick too cookielove.

been eating pineapple?

not re the temp but re the sore tongue

Scarlet fever? That has a very red tongue. Google images "strawberry tongue" but be aware that all the images on the internet are quite extreme and you might actually see something more subtle in your DD?

I noticed it because she drank a smoothie and started to cry. So it obviously irritated her tongue.

Sounds like hand foot and mouth to me. we all had a bout of it a few months ago - high temp, very sore throat/tongue and then red spots/blisters on the palms of hands and soles of feet, although I don't think you necessarily get all the symptoms. My tongue looked like it was all wavy down both sides iyswim and if you can get a look down her throat it might be quite red with spots on the roof right at the back. Not very pleasant at all, but cleared up in about a week - best medicine was ice lollies to soothe the mouth and calpol for the temperature.

my ds1 had something very similar sounding when he was around 2. it did turn out to be thrush whch i was quite at (both he and i had had it when he was a breastfeeding baby) but apparently it can be quite contagious around toddler groups where toys get passed from mouth to mouth [yuck emoticon] and i had been taking him to a less than clean drop in.

he had to have some foul tasting nystatin (i think) painted on his tongue which cleared up the soreness and spots quite quickly.

Thanks for getting back to me. It wouldn't surprise me if she had either, as i've caught her licking things she really shouldn't. .

I've been trying to get a doc appointment, so hopefully i'll get to see one soon.

It's just odd that she seems sort of ok, temp gone, just a slight runny nose and a few raised marks on her tongue. Although she had a rotten night's sleep last night, yet still managed to be quite chatty in the early hours of the morning and insistent we find peppar pig in the dark. .

Maybe she has little ulcers on her Tongue from being run down after her illness? DH gets them all the time after he's been sick.
