Toddler vomiting because of cough/phlegm - what should I be doing?

Ds woke up (not for the first time) vomiting up clear mucus. He refused breakfast prior to that, and I gave him a cup of water but he's not really had any. I've offered to make him crackers or toast but he refuses so he must still be feeling sick despite vomiting 5 or 6 times.

What should I be doing to make him feel better? I have snufflebabe, karvol and tixylix, and obviously calpol. Should I be encouraging him to eat something or not? I know it's phlegm and not a tummy bug as he's done this before.

Don't worry about food for a while if he doesn't want it, just make sure you keep up the fluids. (we found still 'sports drinks' went down best when DD was like this).

The other thing you can do to help is to humidify the atmosphere - damp towels over radiator, steamy bathroom.

So glad my DDs grown out of it, you have my sympathy!

yeah we just offer him tempting foods like quavers and then if they eta those they get thirsty and that is how you get the fluids in when they arent drinking much - - - - hospital visit taught us that.

just keep offering, have water bottles about where he can see and get to them.

lost of cuddles and hanging out on the sofa is what we do.

good luck

Thanks, he's still refusing all food but is drinking water so I'm not too worried. Still vomiting clear stuff from time to time, poor thing.

I second creating the humid, steamy atmosphere.... Running the shower on hot and sitting in the bathroom with the door shut is a good one to relieve congestion. That 'claggy' feeling of mucus in the back of the throat is incredibly sick-inducing and, if his nose is clogged up, it makes it difficult to eat and drink as well.

Hope he gets better soon

james I have to ask, what did you do in this case? Your son must be a big boy now...wonder if you even remember! Going through exactly the same case...and it's been 6 days of no breakfasts and marginal meals through the day....

Have called the doc....not getting an appointment for a couple of days.

You should consider whooping cough.

Major symptom is coughing/gagging in clear mucus.
