Hi,
Last Mon, while changing DD's nappy, I noticed that she had a significant quantity of tahini-coloured vaginal discharge. I took her to the doc, who prescribed canesten, and took a swab from some discharge I'd collected on a cotton bud to take with me. Canesten seemed initially to clear it up really quickly, but she still has the odd tiny amount here and there. Got the swab results back late Fri afternoon, and they apparently read normal (yet I was told to continue with the canesten). So. My questions are as follows. Has anyone's dd ever had those symptoms but a normal swab result? If so, what was it, and how long did it take to clear up (and come to that how long does thrush take to clear up)? Is there anything I can do to clear it up more quickly? I've moved her out of cloth nappies into disposables, and am washing her with a weak tea tree oil solution when I change her. I will take her back to the doctor as soon as I can, but we've all got flu at the minute so going out isn't really an option.

try and make sure you clean her from front to back to avoid any faecal infection in the vagina.

Dont know how old your DD is but you might want to think about what washes you use. Any kind of perfume gives me almost immediate irritation, including soap powder.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious

Thanks guys. That's the thing I don't understand. I always do clean her from back to front (although given she had an upset stomach with her bout of flu, she could have easily got faeces into her vagina since she's still in nappies) but surely if that was the cause of the problem, the swabs would have shown that. It's odd. She doesn't have the tahini stuff now (which smelt weird and 'old'. Not unpleasant, just musty and old. Hard to describe. Like stale bread mixed with old books)- it's just mucus with no smell - so maybe that means it's on its way out. Just didn't expect it to take so long to clear up (particularly since pathologically there appears to have been nothing wrong). Weird. Here's hoping my flu goes soon I can take her back to get a second opinion though.

did you mean front to back

alypaly · 28/02/2010 18:35

if the swabs are clear i wouldnt worry too much as they would /should have shown up a faecal infecton too.

Thanks MadameOvary. She's 2.4 by the way. I'm really fussy about what I use to wash her, having suffered with BV once thanks to overperfumed soap. I use plain water to clean her, with perhaps a drop of lavender or tea tree oil in it (heavily diluted so as not to irritate, and I hadn't used either before this happened). Her nappies are washed in hydrogen peroxide, soda and vinegar so they're sterile, and then rinsed and rinsed and rinsed so there's no residue (though that's irrelevant at the minute as she's in disposables until I get this cleared). So I'm pretty sure it's not what she or her clothes are washed in that's the problem. Wish it was. That would be nice and simple
I'm wondering if the fact that her immune system was busy dealing with flu has allowed something to overgrow a bit.

Hope it sorts itself out soon but you are obviously doing everything right. Could just be dead cells, as pixie says

Seona1973 · 28/02/2010 19:02

when dd had thrush at the age of 4 (out of nappies) it took a couple of weeks to clear up properly with the aid of canesten.

Thanks, all of you, for your help. Shall give it another few days and ring the gp in the interim to see if they're remotely concerned. Seona - that's useful to know. Never had it myself.
